I ask because a dear friend of mine seems to have accumulated 3 cats since his lovers death 18 months ago. The thing is, in the 20 years I have known him he was always a dog person. So the fact he got rid of his dog when his lover died and got a cat was a shock. :yup:  The fact he then proceeded to get 2 more cats over the next few months is beyond baffling.

He called me last week concerned that he was becoming one of those people. He wanted to know how many cats he could own before he would become known as that crazy gay guy with all the cats. I said 5, just to make him feel better; but I think maybe 4 is the cut off.
    • At some point you go from being a pet lover to a pet hoarder. Where is the line?
    • How many cats can you own before the neighbors start calling you the crazy cat lady or crazy cat man?
    • I don't think the size of your home matters either. If you have 10 cats or 10 dogs and you live in a doublewide, or a 2 bedroom apartment, or a 3500 sq.ft. house; it's still 10 cats/dogs. I think that makes you crazy.

I've always felt like four was a respectable number.

1 is too many cats. Now dogs, that's another matter. 3 or 4 is about max, I think, unless you are a dog breeder and you have a litter of puppies.

Spoken like a man who hates cats. Have you been talking to TruckerTexman, he isn't overly fond of cats either. :lmao:

I for one love cats, when we had 4 it felt a bit hectic, however it was a small house and a small yard. Three felt Perfect

I have a boy and a girl, they are brother and sister. They were rescue cats, from the Middle East Animal Shelter.
Hubby got a kitten, now a HUGE FAT ass Maine coon mix spoiled kitty cat. So, I say 3.

Cats freak me out, they are sneaky and evil. Dogs require much more care and are more like having a toddler that never grows up.

Maybe, just maybe, 2 is not pathological.

    Beyond that, you're nuts.

Me, I've got one. He's great. He's my dog, but he never needs walking and he does his business in a litter box.

When my sister and I became roomies, she had 4 cats and I had one. Total of 5.

My cat had specific dietary needs and spent a lot of time in his kennel pen. One is enough for me, maybe two max.

After having to deal with the clean up from 5 cats, it was too much and too time consuming.

There were also two dogs in the mix, a chocolate Lab and a Golden Retriever. Both were well behaved but found a hole in the fence and ran off so we lost them. I don't care for large dogs like that either, the clean up is just gross. lol Smaller dogs for me.

We've never had more than two cats at a time, and I think that's about right, or maybe three at a push.
One of my friends has 17, but she does a lot of rescue work and most of those are just waiting to be rehomed, and yes, she gets called the cat lady or Catwoman, which suits her fine as she's got the outfit and the whip, but that's another story. (You can take the girl out of Essex.)

Three is too many unless you have a much bigger house/yard than average. Two can be justified to keep each other company.
