i'm sure everyone believes in gender equality, but i think that is separate to feminism.

feminism has become associated with victim culture, and left wing pollitics. It has also became very dogmatic and humourless, and man hating is a part of it. The endless consipiracy theories have nt helped either.

It's important to remember that not all women are feminists, Margaret Thatcher certainly was nt, and feminists hated her despite her incredible achievement in becoming PM.

A lot of women i know prefer being at home with children to working, and quite a few dislike feminists lack of feminity

Rancid post.

He fails to understand what any movement is.

saying man hating is part of feminism is like saying that blowing up abortion clinics is part of christianity.

people who label all members of a group with the behaviour nutcase few...

and thatcher? being a woman does not automatically make her a feminist icon. pardon me if i judge her on her policies, same as any other politician, instead of just giving her browny points for having tits.

I'm not sure if this has already been said, but feminism is essentially about equality of rights for women in all spheres of life, be that economic, political, social etc.

That being the case, I would hope that everyone can proudly call themselves a feminist.

BTW, Dolfette, WHAT is that in your avatar? It looks like something with more than four legs and that is creepy crawlie. I'm terrified of anything with more than four legs.

*Shudders uncontrollably*

The first time I saw it I tried to squish it!

What was un-sensible about my post?

Comparing feminism to 'Victim culture', lacks a basic understanding. Going on further to add that feminism is down to 'Man hating' is also a little silly.

I really don't think you've met any feminists, ever.

Feminism no absolutely not, it has taken a horrible place in society to the point where men are wearing uggs and feel manly about it.

Equality for all yes, but when the boat is sinking and all are equal do women still go first on the rafts?

You seem to be confused about feminism if you think it has anything to with with men wearing Uggs.

It seems to me that if one is truly a feminist (in the sense that almost all the posters here mean), then one must also be a masculist. There's no point being one without the other. I'd say humanist, but the accepted definition of that is human primacy vs divine.

What was so objectionable about the ERA (constitutional Equal Rights Amendment) in the United States? Why did some oppose it so vehemently? Good lord, even Texas ratified it. Isn't it basically the equivalent of gender equality in Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms? And is the ERA drive technically still alive? I understand there is some debate about this.

Some reasons why I would never call myself a feminist, even though I believe in gender equality; here is a small collection of things influential feminists have said : -

"I feel that 'man-hating' is an honorable and viable political act, that the oppressed have a right to class-hatred against the class that is oppressing them." -- Robin Morgan, Ms. Magazine Editor.

"To call a man an animal is to flatter him; he's a machine, a walking dildo."
-- Valerie Solanas, Authoress of the SCUM Manifesto

"I want to see a man beaten to a bloody pulp with a high-heel shoved in his mouth, like an apple in the mouth of a pig." -- Andrea Dworkin

"Feminism is the theory, lesbianism is the practice." -- Ti-Grace Atkinson

"When a woman reaches orgasm with a man she is only collaborating with the patriarchal system, eroticizing her own oppression." -- Sheila Jeffrys

"All sex, even consensual sex between a married couple, is an act of violence perpetrated against a woman." -- Catherine MacKinnon

"The proportion of men must be reduced to and maintained at approximately 10% of the human race." -- Sally Miller Gearhart

"If life is to survive on this planet, there must be a decontamination of the Earth. I think this will be accompanied by an evolutionary process that will result in a drastic reduction of the population of males." --Mary Daly

"And if the professional rapist is to be separated from the average dominant heterosexual (male), it may be mainly a quantitative difference."
-- Susan Griffin

Please, educate yourselves, and do NOT buy into outdated, rancid stereotypes. It does no one involved any favors.

If only they really were outdated stereotypes.

Here is a feminist article I stumbled across yesterday, written earlier this year. It ends by saying : -

"My own personal vision is that women will cure the sickness that ails men and that men will stay around, hunkered in their man-caves playing the ukelele, leaving us in peace at last. As to what that cure may be, my best bet is that what’s wrong with men is that their androgens need genetic modification."

In other words, genetically rid the world of all men.

Then look at the comments section. One responder says : -

"Women need to stop raising male children. Women who raise male children are digging the graves of other females. Nobody wants to bite that bullet (except lesbian separatists) but it must be done."

And other posters agree with her!

Billigerent man-hating is still very much alive and well in modern feminism, despite what some claim. All that stuff didn't go away in the 70s, and it has found a new voice, via the internet.

Although I believe in gender equality, and take it as a given that nobody should be descrinimated against because of their gender, I would still never call myself a feminist, because I do not in any way want to be associated with the hatred that some feminist promote, and others turn a blind eye to.
