Currently, no one is on my ignore list. When there was a period of high troll activity, I once put 2 people on the list for about 1 week. I could tell from the context of other people's posts if it was worthwhile to ignore. Ultimately, the two trolls were banned, so I resumed normal activity.

I don't think vBulletin will pass on PMs from them to you, and probably doesn't send them from you to them (though I can't think why anyone who'd put someone on their ignore list would choose to PM them).

But will they get some kind of notification if they try and send a PM to one who has them on their ignore list?

The ignore function is something that I have usually used for less than 3 days during any specific period.

I have actually used it when I've felt that someone may decide to become unpleasant towards me. I have no idea if they have ever attempted to send PM to me however. I like to assert myself from time to time.

It has probably had no real purpose because I have never had more than one unwanted PM from any individual (probably because of my less than polite responses). Apart from that, I get curious after about 5 mins anyway, and have to peak to see what is going on.

I think in real life I block people out too though, its more of a holiday from distractions so that I can focus my energy when I need to. I think I mainly just do it because I can though.

While everyone feels entitled to have an opinion, I don't always agree that they need to share it. Plus, I like to have the odd fight out of a misguided sense of justice from time to time. I've been known put people on ignore before I enter into a particularly vigorous discussion, usually because I have no tolerance for other people repeating themselves, or stating the obvious.

Only once did I find the need to place a person on my ignore list. They stayed there a while until I was ready to move on. In part they needed to be taken off the ignore list, because they make many good posts and I really didn't want to keep missing out on them and when they make posts I do not care for, I can skip by them.

Exactly the reasoning that keeps me from putting peeps on ignore.

Don't really have the time or energy to waste on a negative such as an "ignore list" . What I do have is an extensive "Buddy List"

I didn't have anyone on my ignore list either, for the first year or so I was here.

Now I have 63 people there. And I have to say it's definitely enhancing my experience of LPSG at the moment. :)

I have a shit-ton of people on ignore, and even more that I ignore on my own. Most of the people on my ignore list are banned by now anyway, so it seems I saved myself some unnecessary grief. For the record, we can and DO ignore people in real life too- telemarketers, salesmen, stupid strangers who intrude on our personal space- don't act like we owe everyone our attention nomatter who they are or how rude or intrusive they behave- that's just ridiculous.

I come here to talk to the people I like to talk to, and read what the people whose words are of interest to me have to say, and there are a lot of them, covering a wide variety of opinions. I don't have any interest whatever in reading the deep and penetrating thoughts of people I consider stupid, so I don't. The ignore button is my friend!

By the way, I DON'T automatically classify people who disagree with me as "stupid" either. Many of the people I prefer to read are people I don't have a lot in common with, but I learn new things frequently from reading their posts. A person gets a classification of "stupid" from me by saying things consistently that don't make sense (yes, that means they don't make sense to ME).

I am frequently amazed that people can often put forth really poor arguments for something, and they pass as acceptable- especially in THIS forum, Etc, which had traditionally been reserved for more critical posting.
There was a time when almost ANYTHING posted in this forum would be challenged by almost everybody, and I think we've gotten so lax about this that it's become a haven for the undead, I'm not even slightly kidding.
Let's sharpen our skills folks, or this will be just another site among millions where stupidity is praised and reality is shunned.
