Using San Bruno, CA municipal cable...

$17.68 for basic cable
$ 0.08 for copyright fee (whatever the hell that is)
$26.41 for Expanded Basic
$ 2.20 for franchise fee (whatever the hell that is)
$29.95 for Internet broadband
$-4.42 low income discount (I'm nearly indigent...)
_____
$72.00

I started out with basic service and finally added expanded; there wasn't anything but infomercials and foreign language stations following Conan O'Brien. Now, at least, I can watch Fox and Friends at 3:00 a.m. (PST).

added broadband when I had a nervous breakdown waiting for dial up to display pages.

In Buenos Aires the options are Telecanal or Cablevision. I pay 21.50 Pesos (divide by 3 for the dollar amount, 4 for the Euro amount) for my high speed Internet Connection (Fibertel - part of Telefonica that provides Cablevision) and if I want to watch TV I disconnect the coaxial cable from my modem and hook it to the back of the TV. The same coaxial cable carries Cablevision's 83 basic channels and I can access them at no charge. After midnight channels 60 and 61 show XXX-rated porn -- both gay and straight -- until 6:00 AM.

That reminded me of something. I was in Spain just recently when I thought to myself, "You know, I haven't watched Spanish language television in a long time." I've always had this prejudice against it, because I grew up mainly watching basic cable that was chock full of terrible "Latino" programming all the time. Anyway, I decided to see what was on. I got up, went to media center thingy that lots of European hotels are using now, and turned the t.v. on. The instant I flipped the switch, I heard, "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!!!!"

My perception of Spanish language t.v. hasn't changed, I think.

Of the 83 Argentine channels I can watch about 11 of them are in English with Spanish subtitles (Sony International, WB, Universal, BBC News, Hallmark Channel, I-Sat, MGM, I can't remember them all), one channel is exclusively French, another German, CNN Español, ESPN Español, Cooking, Discovery, Animal Planet, Bravo, etc., are all dubbed in Spanish, a bunch of movie channels with mostly 'Mericuhn movies dubbed in Spanish, and 19 local Argentine channels. All the Argentine channels show football sometime during the day, but Saturdays and Sundays are the high holidays for football. Still, football is not a 24/7 thing. The local sports channels cover lots of polo (they are queer for polo down here), auto racing, basketball (NOT balencesto), rugby, and sports fishing. The non-sports Spanish-language channels are not without their fair share of melodramatic telenovelas from Puerto Rico, Mexico, Miami, Argentina and Spain. But if you really need to have it, you can watch CSI (name the US city) and all the gore and murder Law and Order is famous for. You can also order HBO which includes several HBO Spanish channels in addition to the regular English HBO plus an adult HBO. The Playboy channel is rather popular.

It's interesting to watch one of the original "Mi Novia Fea" (Chile, Ecuador, México, and Spain have all produced local versions) and compare the cultural values covered in those plots with the new fave rave "Ugly Betty" which is the 'Mericuhn interpretation of the same sitcom, but in English. But my interest in all of them wanes rather quickly.

Basically, it's a cultural thing. Either you like it or you don't. My secret indulgence is rearranging my Internet hookup just to watch Little Britain at 21:30 Friday nights. They are old repeats, but rippingly funny old repeats. "Yeah, but, yeah, but . . no, but. . . yeah!"

Sorry, I couldn't make out a word you said. This announcer guy is completely drowning you out.
