I just meant that he didn't have much of a record or "achievement" when he ran. This is not to denigrate him, but rather to say that perhaps people voted for him based more on the kind of man that they thought he was, i.e. his "character", which is the other term you used.

I never put any stock into that "hope and change" slogan and I can't believe that any other American with a brain did either. IMO, the most rational way to vote is on the issues.

Many are still saying it now. They'll always think of some ridiculous excuse as to why people supported Obama in 2008 or even support him currently. Some of them want to reduce it to mind numbing things such as his skin color, or because he knew how to deliver a speech, or because of the catchy "hope & change" bumper sticker catchphrase or any of that other bullshit. I was originally a Hillary supporter. I eventually voted for Obama because it was down to he and McCain come election time and given the two choices I thought he would be the better person for the job based on their stances on issues that I cared about the most.

But those who are so hell bent on proving that nobody could have ever voted for someone based on the issues and only because he looks & sounds pretty on TV will never listen to reason. That's because they, themselves, do it and think what they do must be what everyone else does... but we can't tell them that either. So screw 'em.

Obama sounded great in 2008 in most everything he said. Sadly like almost every President that changed quickly when he got into office.

One has to recognize 'our' political system isn't 'ours' and hasn't been for a long long time. And thanks to 'Citizens United' we can now official drop all pretense that we have government of the people, by the people, for the people . So we can vote democrat and for Obama in hopes we can stem the tide but without an entire reworking of the Constitution and a dismantling of the power structure that controls Washington I doubt anything will ever change. We can marvel at how we went from a democracy to a plutocracy while we went to the Mall and watched American Idol.

The implications that sargon is makiing here cannot be overstated. Things have gotten SO bad that serious change of some sort is desperately needed. Personally, I see it as a problem brought on by the ignorance of the electorate (as a whole, not every individual citizen).

Voting for Obama won't stem any tide whatsoever.
