Oh and also: the US used to have the best-ranked education system in the world. Now we're 24th, largely due to inequality in wealth and underfunded college education ( most countries provide free college education for most of their universities).
We also used to has he best health care system in the world. Now we're #37. behind Slovenia: a former Soviet state. Our transportation system went down the drain as soon as we sold our railroads to GM, who just let them rot so they could sell cars. Sure, cars may have become more efficient over the last few decades, but nowhere near as efficient as European or Asian societies. And even then tr only reason people really started caring about fuel efficiency was because China (gasp) started offering oil-rich countries better prices. And prices will continue to rise and energy costs will become a crutch for every sector of the economy which - yes - means a further degradation until we adopt fuel sources that are actually reusable (like that giant yellow thing up in the sky). You put way too much faith into free market and optimistic human spirit and whatnot.
