Margaret Cho has a bit in her comedy routine where she is talking about how beautiful many gay men are... she says that to get real ab definition it is necessary to suck sock. YMMV.

While it's true that you have to keep the body fat low to keep from hiding the abs, you still have to do some effort to actually have something to show. I've always been skinny and could show some amount of abs by flexing, but I've got something more noteworthy to show now that I've been working out more.

The thing I haven't quite figured out is whether, in the typical photo of an abs-touting model (e.g., A&F), is the guy flexing the muscles or can maintain that look even when relaxed. I'd say the flex is obvious in 10-25% of photos, but I'm nto sure about the remainder.

Lose weight. If you're overweight doing any number of abdominal exercises and buying all those late night ab machines won't help you. You'd have to do 7,200 crunches daily to lose one pound of weight in a week.

my trainer likes to say "abs are made in the kitchen." a disciplined diet is key.

with the exception of a summer in college involving a lot of stress and unintended starvation, i've never achieved a true six pack. if i stay on top of a routine i can hold on to a four pack without killing myself, which is just fine on my frame--any leaner and i begin to look sickly (my dad is full swede, built for high life expectancy on meat and dairy--six packs aren't part of the long winter genetic program;-)

i hate doing ab work and can easily fall off the wagon over holidays. taking some sort of 'ab-lab' class definitely helps. i've been adding resistance to my crunches too, which i find gives me greater benefit in less time.

i agree with everone else.about 9 years ago.my daughter, and i were in a bad car wreck.i tore my back up pretty bad.i was laid up for a year.i gained almost 90 pounds.i didn't have a choice.i had to exercise.it's hard as hell to give up all the junk food, but you got to do it.just like my doc told me there is really no such thing as a diet.you just need to eat everthing in moderation.i drink alot of water, eat fish, chicken, and plent of fresh fruits, and veggies.i work out 5 times a week.running,weights.however i hate the ab workouts, but i do it.i have since lost all that weight.i am actually thinner now than i was before the car accident.
