I'm a firm believer that what people choose as their career speaks volumes about them. And when I meet someone for the first time, one of the things I like to chat about is how they got where they are in life.

So, how'd you end up with your current day job?

I've actually only worked for one single company all my life. My best friend in high school recommended me to his boss at a national department store. I got hired in an entry level position. The boss told my friend that she wanted to fire me because she thought I didn't have the balls to succeed. Thirteen years later, I'm her boss's boss.

I always knew what industry I wanted to work in. Financial services. I have a head and a natural aptitude for figures.

5 years ago I got the chance of a good redundancy package from work which I was happy to accept. I moved abroad and did something completely different for five years but it came to a natural conclusion last year.

I'm back in the UK now and you can guess what industry I'm working in.

Same field, but different reason (and not just cos I like checkin out ppl's figures ). I'm ok but not brilliant w/numbers...but am hyper-organised, so accounts and payroll suit me. I do have to be careful not to make silly mistakes tho.

    I've got it!

You love meeting new people, interacting with people from all backgrounds. You also love wearing either not very much, or pretty tight clothing... In short, you're a bit of a whore!

Yes...I've been studying the Thought Police for some time now. So I toss hooks in the water and wait for the normal routine. Their manuals and techniques remain....unchanged.

Their giveaway is being purebred bullies who consistently use the same words.

They use a lot of handles but their hatred and technique gives it away...

I am of the opinion that most careers are opportunistic. I didn't plan my career paths, but rather each previous endeavor left me qualified for interesting but different opportunities that came along later.

Most adults do not work in the field they trained for in college, but their college education and their experience qualified them for what they were doing later in life.

The most interesting careers are those that bridge two or more disciplines, in my opinion. My degrees in EE and Physics prepared me for a very productive career in scientific instrument development. With only one or the other degree, I would have been far less valuable.

The software aspect came along as electronic logic began to be more and more taken over by microprocessors and software. It was a logical progression to then move to automating scientific instruments with software that drove the electronics that did the physics.

In summary, I did not choose my career so much as my early career choices led to other very different career opportunities.

By the way, if I were to do it all over again, I would choose either jazz pianist or college professor.
