It's the response to previous public health crises where communicable disease is involved. 1992 is a bit late for such outdated thoughts but in the beginning he would not have been alone. Go someplace where there is a cholera outbreak and you'll see people being shot for leaving quarantine houses. It's no joke. So few people knew or understood what HIV was when it appeared that few were even sure it wasn't transmissible via a sneeze or saliva left on silverware or glasses. AIDs from dinnerplates! Only clear the table with gloved hands, sterilize everything!

We haven't lived through a major plague since the 1918 influenza epidemic. We forget how epidemics were treated in the past. I'm not excusing Huckabee but his desire to quarantine would have been what public health agencies would have advocated in the past. As to the research, that's just sad. True that those three diseases effect far more people but heart disease is preventable in all but those with an unusual genetic disposition to it. Diabetes may well be preventable too. Of them all, I say that only cancer deserves more money than HIV research though I feel I'm making a Sophie's choice by saying so.

i thought you meant he died and was confused as to why this wasn't on the news.

Whoops! Sorry about that.

I understand what you're saying, Jason, but he made these statements well after we knew what the transmission methods of AIDS were. Taking that along with his desire to not fund researching a cure makes me think that, yet again, we're dealing with a man who cares more about what people do in the bedroom than if they are dying horrible deaths. The idea that AIDS is somehow something people deserve to get is still pervasive in our society, and its absurd. What it comes down to is that Huckabee specifically wanted to stop federal funding on AIDS research but not other preventable diseases like heart disease, lung cancer, etc. Is it worse morally/ethically to abuse yourself for years by drinking, smoking, and eating too much or to have sex with the wrong person without a condom? As usual, what it boils down to is sex, not the disease.

Huckabee.

Its funny how Romney is being put on the defensive for being a Mormon but Huckabee is not closely questioned why he believes the dinosaurs died because they couldn't fit on Noah's ark and that AIDS patients should be quarantined.

Well, the circumstances regarding transmission may have been "known" at the time, but there are still people today who are confused about AIDS, and other STI's. I saw a girl on the Tyra Banks show recently on an episode about parents educating their children about sex... and she said that AIDS could be transmitted through kissing, but not sex. Just goes to show... no matter how much knowledge there is in the world, someone out there doesn't really know.

This won't hurt him at all in the Republican primaries.

and as far as the Republican front runners go... I actually kind of like Huckabee. He's way too religious, and perhaps too naive to be an effective chief executive, but at least he's not a total douchebag.

I like the McCain of 2000. McCain of '04 not as much. McCain of '08 very little... but I'm holding out hope (in case of an unlikely win by him) that his conservative ass-kissing lately is just completely for show because he realizes that it's the only way he can win the primary race, and then once he has that taken care of he'll come back to the center for the national race and the following four years, and get back to talking about necessary political reform. As much as I detest this type of disingenuous politics, I understand the necessity of it for candidates trying to run in the current ultra-partisan climate.

I appreciate Giuliani's moderate stance on social issues, don't like him for most other reasons. On foreign policy he scares me.

Mitt Romney seems like a reasonable and level-headed guy, even though there are plenty of things I disagree with him about, too.

Ron Paul is probably my favorite of the "front runners," though it's difficult to make the argument that he even deserves to be called a front runner. Also, if he were elected to office, I'd hope that the Democrats would win a large majority in both the House and the Senate to keep him somewhat in check so he can't disband air traffic control and the FDIC. I like that he actually embraces real Conservative values, not this neo-con/religious right bullshit.

If we could make a sort of Frankenstein's monster out of all the candidates that would be ideal.

Take a read. I think he's backpedaling and trying not to look like a homophobe, and doing a really good job of looking like an ass. I hope this nukes his campaign.

Huckabee Wanted to Isolate AIDS Patients - TIME

Well, I would hope it would nuke his campaign too, but unfortunately most people I've known would agree with him. He's very popular with the religious right.

I think he probably scares me most of all the candidates.

I was going to post in defense of Huckabee, but NIC pretty much summed up my opinion on the matter.

I'll add this though: If it was between Huckabee and Clinton, I'd probably cross party lines and vote for Huckabee. I don't trust her, especially after the Iran vote.

That said, I'm caucusing for Edwards, Biden's my second choice, followed by Obama ... damn, with that revelation, so much for my desire to keep my whereabouts top secret.

Huckabee releases rapists and murderers, but keeps nonviolent drug dealers in jail.

He will not be able to get away from his pardon happy days as governor. If a pastor would tell him a crook had accepted Jesus, Huckabee would let him out. One of them ended up murdering and raping again.

that is what is going to sink Huckabee. The families have already been on TV trash talking him before... I am sure they would be willing to do it again, to be sure he never becomes president.

I am with NIC on this, too. Except that Ron Paul scares me. He is refreshing in that he says what he thinks and he seems to make sense much of the time. He also doesn't duck questions. However, he has too many ties to Christian Dominionists for my taste. Those dudes are really scary.

Huckabee is not a stupid man, for sure. Also, his ability to think on his feet allows him to really shine in public debates when the tough questions come around. I don't agree with a lot of his politics, however, and I agree with Snoozan's analysis that Huckabees unwillingness to fund AIDS/HIV research says someting about his motivation to quarantine people with AIDS. Finally, I don't think I could get used to having the leader of the free world in this technolologically competitive 21st century believing that the earth is only 6000 years old and fossils were produced by the Great Flood.

I agree with those who are suggesting that Huckabee's past will catch up with him in this race. You can't be a vocal Southern Baptist Convention preacher and not have said things in the past that you would regret in a presidential campaign.

Hillary impressed me with a charisma during public debates that I never knew she had, and Obama disappointed me for not having it when I expected he would.

Biden is a wildcard. I can't help thinking that he makes a lot of sense. There is something in his delivery, though, that makes me feel like he doesn't take it all very seriously.

Guiliani scares the daylights out of me. I couldn't figure out why he aligned all of his positions with the Bush administration. Why would anyone align themselves with history's least popular president. Then it occured to me that Bush's lack of popularity is not due to a disenchantment with the overall policy, but with a disenchantment with the Bush administration to carry them out competently.

So here comes Guiliani who has positioned himself as a competent "uber-Bush".

JustAsking, I think maybe the reason Biden doesn't take this seriously is that he is trailing so far in the polls. I'm not sure why, I think he may be my favorite candidate on the Democratic side, but he usually comes in at or near last in most polls.

As for the 2-3 clear Democratic frontrunners, I personally favor Obama.

I was going to stay out of this debate, but I will voice my opinion since I am from the great state of Arkansas AND was a member of Gov. Huckabee's congregation.

Pardons: Look at the record. DuMond (sp?) did rape and murder again. Gov. Huckabee was given bad information when he pardoned Wayne. He understands that and he accepts that. Should that ONE case prevent him from being President? Look at the Clintons friends who were killed or went missing. Vincent Foster should really ring a bell here. Look at the pardons that Clinton handed down just before he left office.

If I were to vote today for anyone of the candidates, I'd vote for Huckabee. I have lived through enough of Clintonian politics to do for a lifetime. I do not trust Hillary as far as I can throw her.

Is Huckabee a homophobe? NO. He and I talked about that several months ago when he came into the restaurant that I owned at the time. I asked him about his stance on Homosexuality. He believes, of course, that it is a sin. BUT he believes that it is up to God to judge the sinner and it is up to us to have compassion toward the sinner. He, in 1992, made a bad judgment call, but he is no homophobe. He doesn't like the lifestyle...most heterosexual people don't, but he doesn't hate the homosexual. Fornication in any form is a sin according to the Bible whether it's heterosexual or homosexual.

This is just my two cents worth.
