South Of The Border was a great documentary Oliver Stone made...he was a fixture. I always respected him...democratically elected, and cleanly I believe.

In twenty years, I am sure infotainment talking heads will be talking about his brutal regime and killing of tens of thousands of dissidents, even though he never had any opponent killed.

It's amazing how demonized the man was.

He told the US no. What's amazing is that he was only demonized and died of natural causes.

The CIA tried to take him away in 2002, after their failed 2-day coup attempt.
And "tyrant" Chavez did not even have charges pressed against the coup plotters. Many of the heads of the coup are still in Venezuelan politics today.

But you'll find idiots all over message boards claiming Chavez "killed" all those who opposed him and "ruled with an iron fist" and other such nonsense.

Yeah. The story doesn't say where he said that. Because he didn't say that. But who in America reads the story anymore? Just lie in the headlines. Nobody will notice.

SeattleYO did you live there and find out for yo urself. I have friends that live there and he did kill people and rule with an iron fist. Granted he did some good things, even my friends say that, but he also did a lot of bad things too. If you didnt live there or have friends who have lived under his admin, dont base your opinions of just what you have read. thanks

Did you?

You have anecdotal friends that heard he killed people?
Wow.

I'll base my opinion on the fact there was a 2002 coup by the military and old oil guys, that kidnapped him from the palace and threatened to bomb the palace if he did not go with them.

Then a US plane came to pick him up. For two days, the military ruled Venezuela, and dissolved the National Assembly and the supreme court.

Chavez never even had any of these coup plotters or collaborators brought up on any charges, much less jailed.

IRON FIST! -- my ass.

Find me any other country or leader in the world that would not bring charges against coup plotters. Name ONE.

Yet I am supposed to believe some guy with friends in Venezuela who heard rumors that he actually had lesser opponents killed, without a shred of evidence. We are talking fourth or fifth removed from the actual source of the rumor.

No, I think my opinion is more logical than that based on rumor. I don't have to live there. And there is absolutely no proof or even accusations he had opponents killed, besides a US State department memo that it "may" look into accusation he killed "up to" 4000 people.

No human rights organization has ever even claimed he had political opponents executed.

Obviously I'm not going to be a big fan of Chavez. I'm happy he's no longer in charge, but to express so much glee over his death is just wrong.

I'm a devout Christian. God said vengeance is His...I'm in no position to judge Chavez. A man is dead, and left behind at least a few people who obviously liked him, as can even be seen in this thread.

Though I will shed no tears, you have my sympathies for your loss. Yeah, it's a fine line I'm not crossing.

Not my favorite political leader, but not the worst either. Can only hope the next guy in line isn't worse. So I guess..... R.I.P. Chavez

It's amazing how demonized the man was.

Really only by American industrialists because the man seized control of the country's resources, broke corporate monopolies and socialized many government programs in the name of bettering the lives of the greater society.

Capitalists simply do not like that kind of behavior!

Capitalists have always worked along the lines of do as I say, not as I do.

I mourn the loss of a human being. I am sure he did some good and bad, both. Some like him, some dont. I do read but I also listen to the friends I have who lived under his govt. I would tend to believe my friends more than what I read because they lived it everyday and what you read can be changed. I do pray for his soul though.

By the same token, someone in Venezuala could ask their "American friends" their opinion of the president and get a similar response from those that don't like him. I've seen claims that Obama has killed innocent people and that he essentially "rules with an iron fist" though those exact words haven't been used. Because someone says it, doesnt make it true. Your friends may be right, but more likely, it's a matter of perception. I'm not claiming the man was a saint, but the numbers show Venezualans are better off now than they were when his reign started. He was a politician, and like all politicians there are going to be those that agree and those that don't. Prove he did the things you claim, and not with a "my friend lives there" story.

From what I saw of the man, he seemed to genuinely care for his country and it's people. He had a vision of what it would take to better his country and it's people and he did what he could to make that vision a reality. I can't think of one leader through history that was loved by all.

At least he died of a natural. He was not shot, stabbed, poisoned or blown up, so that has to mean something. Well, on second thoughts I suppose Gandhi was assassinated, so that little argument goes out the window.
