To cut a very sad story short, let's just say that they found out they were very, very wrong.

There was a case where a child was born with some genitalia both male and female. Since the "penis part" was not developed right, the doctors made the baby female. When "she" got older, she was attracted tp girls, not guys. So a sex change operation was being planned. The DNA test they can do now showed "she" was indeed male. Wish I had the article available.

I suspect that sexual preference is determined long before birth.
