DENVER - Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counterculture writer who popularized a new form of fictional journalism in books like “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” fatally shot himself Sunday night at his Aspen-area home, his son said. He was 67.

I never found him very interesting, don't know if he's reached "icon" status or not. It's sad for his family, of course.

I always got the impression that he was a bit unhinged in a way that makes his suicide unsurprising. Kind of like Kurt Cobain.

I heard about this earlier - very sad - he was a very talented writer though...Definitely can see how he is an icon too...Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is kind of a cult classic...And if you have read or seen his movies - you know the guy had some issues - the great ones usually do...Sad though...
