There was a report on Inside Edition about street food vendors in NYC.

They showed them:

picking their noses
scratching their ass
touching raw meat with gloves and then serving food with the same gloves.
one guy went inside to use a bathroom at a museum and did not wash his hands.
one guy was sitting on a bench resting and running his fingers through his bare toes.
one guy licked his glove to count money and did not change it.

There was more but it was so gross that I am not eating street vendor food ever again.

I saw that too. Nevermind the SAUSAGES and Franks being DAYS old too in many cases.

6 or 7 years ago my now wife, then my girlfriend and a couple we knew
went to see the Toronto Maple Leafs play at the Gardens. It was early
spring and quite warm out so we decided to grab a street dog.Well we're
waiting in line behind four people and a grease fire breaks out on the vendor's BBQ. He calmly reaches for a bottle of water, and I'm Thinking he's just going to pour it on the grill. Wrong!!!!! The gentleman of midle eastern background proceeds to take a big mouthful of water, and then
spit it all over the grill (and food ) to put out the flare up .

Needless to say we turned on our heels and left right away. But the funny thing is, the four people in line in front of us stayed.......

There is a lot to be said for cooking all, or most, of your meals. I've worked in the restaurant business for 18 years. People aren't deliberately trying to get gross; they do it out of ignorance. Most counties require a Food Handler's Course and issue a card that you must present to a prospective employer before you can be hired. Even so, people leave the class and go right back to doing unsanitary practices that they've learned at home. Be choosy where you buy take out food. Food poisoning is the biggest drag!

p.s. My cousin services refrigerators in hotel casinos in Reno. The stories he tells me about the things he sees behind the scenes in the kitchens....

Exactly.
When you eat something not personally prepared by your very own hands you're taking a chance. Even then, there still remain issues about overall food quality--from spoiled meats to feces contaminated fruits and veggies.

If I'm starving, and the cart is right there making hot food, a dude scratching his ass 10 minutes before won't stop me. :shrug:
