Not to sound ignorant, but I'm curious to know. In a gay relationship, how does an HIV positive bottom transmit HIV to the top?

Through the top's urethra, or through any cuts or abrasions on his penis. Body fluids entering mucous membranes or the bloodstream. That is how the virus is spread.

That's also how men pick up HIV from women.

Sometimes the info available out there seems to be vague on purpose. Either they don't really know or they don't want you to know.
I say that because in a study I did in the 90's, the HIV virus is actually very fragile and needs just the right circumstances to infect.
Now, nobody tells you how far, explicitly, you can take it with someone before you can fear infection. You are told just to play safe and use condoms.

Well the odds of surviving shooting oneself in the head are also a bit blurry. in fact many people have survived close decapitations. But I still wouldn't take an axe to my head.

Topping a positive bottom without a condom is a bad plan no doubt, but using a condom the risk plummets. If the positive person is in good health, low viral load, and takes good care of themselves, the risk is almost null. HIV is NOT easy to get, don't do anything that changes that (fuck bare, ignore your health, have a bunch of partners) and you should be good.

I am surprised at the number of guys who will give oral. Even if they don't shoot in your mouth, there are lots of fluids exchanged. What's the risk factor there? I just don't see using a condom here as anything enjoyable. If I want to stick some latex in my mouth, I can chew on a dildo...

The rectum bleeds easily during sex (delicate lining, shallow & plentiful veins), so a top has a fairly high chance of getting blood on their cock from fucking a bottom. Blood on your cock is one of the mostly likely ways of transmitting HIV, same as fucking a positive woman during her period.
