Simplex 1, that is. Every summer I get one or two cold sores. Does anyone else get them? If so, have you ever tried Valtrex or another anti-viral medication to ward them off or reduce healing time and did it work?
I wonder if I have it. I used to get a small cold snore above my upper lip ... about every two years. Had it four or five times, and haven't had it for, gosh, 15 years now. Presumably it was (is, if it's just dormant) some form of herpes. Simplex 1?
Yes, The doctor has given me Valtrex for the two forms of herpes that have arisen while under her care. Simplex 1 (Cold sores) and Shingles(Adult form of chicken pox) . If it is taken early on in the cycle it can help it from breaking out at all. I do hate having to go pick it up at the pharmacy! LOL! :biggrin1: Dont you wish they would stop advertising it for Genital Herpes on TV? It makes you want to wear dark glasses when you have to get it for anything else! LOL! I know a case of an older lady who got Shingles (common with seniors) and she started crying because she said everyone would think she was a bad woman if she had to take Valtrex. Poor baby!
Rubi, If you have ever had Chicken Pox or cold sores in the past it stays in your system dormant until it decides it wants to say hi. It can come because of stress, nerve injury, compromised immune system, a whole list of causes. I used to think you couldnt get Chicken pox again until it hit me as shingles as an adult. THere are even medications which can trigger it.
Yes. Most people catch this strain before they reach the age of 10 and it lies dormant in a nerve under the cheekbone until something triggers an eruption. Most people who catch it don't have break-outs but i'm one of the lucky few.
Thanks, Naughty. It's more annoying and unsightly than anything. I walk around feeling like a leper and I can't kiss anyone until it heals. Guess i'll be making a visit to the doc for a scrip. Yeah, i'll be looking forward to picking that up at the pharmacy. :biggrin1: You know it. Give me a kiss, baby.
I guess I'm the only person gullible enough to be 'upset' for a split second when seeing the thread title. I've never had a cold sore, but this thread shows me I need to learn about Herpes - anyone care to hook me up? (With a link that is :tongue
I'm lucky enough never to have had a cold sore - but loads of people do - in Ireland and the UK there's a treatment called Zovirax - which pretty much everyone I know who gets cold sores swears by. Dunno if you get it in the states or if it is the same thing..
Well, I wonder if you've had a few outbreaks, but none for a very long time, if you're in the clear. I don't suppose you know until they're putting the pennies on your eyes -- and you can say, Yeah, great life ... I never had another outbreak.
As I said, you never know when it might come up. It is unfortunately one of those great mysteries in life...
I've got one right now inside my mouth right at the point where my gumline meets the inside of my lip. Extremely painful every time I talk or smile or chew...

Here's a link, Roux. I've heard of Zovirax and i'll ask about it. Thank you, MB. I think "she had over 3,500 posts at LPSG.org" would make a better epitaph. Quoted for truth. I always get one when i'm ready to go on a trip, hence my current outbreak. That's a canker sore. I get those once in a while, but they're not the same.
Cold sores are viral and form on the outside of your lip. Canker sores are non-viral ulcers that form in the soft tissues inside your mouth.
