    Hollaback!

    About:

Hollaback! is a movement dedicated to ending street harassment using mobile technology. Street harassment is one of the most pervasive forms of gender-based violence and one of the least legislated against. Comments from “You’d look good on me” to groping, flashing and assault are a daily, global reality for women and LGBTQ individuals. But it is rarely reported, and it’s culturally accepted as ‘the price you pay’ for being a woman or for being gay.

By collecting women and LGBTQ folks’ stories and pictures in a safe and share-able way with our very own mobile phone applications, Hollaback! is creating a crowd-sourced initiative to end street harassment. Hollaback! breaks the silence that has perpetuated sexual violence internationally, asserts that any and all gender-based violence is unacceptable, and creates a world where we have an option—and, more importantly—a response.

It looks they have free iPhone and Droid apps. It's only a US thing now, but their team is working to launch it worldwide in Summer 2011.

I haven't downloaded the app, don't really need to at this particular time, but do any other women here need this?

They do have a rather awesome guideline about how to respond to harassers:

I only know a little about street harassment, but I know plenty about public transport harassment. I've used the tactics described in the link, when responding to disgusting men who think a crowded train or bus is a perfect place to grope or rub themselves against me.

Using the assertive words described does work.

I've also pushed a guy down a flight of stairs in a bar when he thought it was a good idea to put his hand up my skirt and grab a handful of arse. Possibly not my wisest move. I should have cut his balls off.

Lovely to teach people of any gender to stick up for themselves.

mutiliation is only ok if they mutilate you
overreaction is typical of females sadly
I'm sure he feels he should have raped you instead of just grabbing your ass...
that just makes you both scum

Did you enjoy it, TheRob? That is what makes all the difference.

And stapple-ing, whatever that is, would not stop her from having hands. The practice is called infibulation btw. Look it up before you prescribe it.

Firstly, you are right to call me out for saying "I should have cut his balls off". What I should have said was "It made me feel like cutting his balls off".

He ran up the stairs behind me, lifted my skirt and pushed me forward as he grabbed my arse. I was being sexually assaulted by a random guy, with no one in the vicinity to help me. My natural instinct was to turn around and push him away. It made me feel angry and violent towards him, and it wasn't the time for making an assertive statement and hoping he'd go away.

Secondly, your sweeping statement about women overreacting is pathetic. It's you that is overreacting.

Thirdly, be a good boy and piss off back to making your incessant, off-topic, lecherous comments to the women on this board. Actually, scratch that, you should just fuck off and stop harrassing the females on this board.

Oh, and you think THIS is not overreacting and is perfectly acceptable behavior?

Raping a women should NEVER be jested about. It is NEVER the solution to ANYTHING. NOT EVER. And I don't give a fuck what a woman has said or done to you. It is NOT okay.

Now unless you have something to actually contribute to this thread please leave.
