Do you have some African-American blood in you, somewhere ??

At least, with an interest in Nina Simone, you have
    • rhythm
    • soul
    • a rebellious spirit somewhere
    • an eye for talent
    • a yen for sermons
Wonderful lady... She lived her later years in a cultural exile in Paris -- sad really.

You know she lived out her last days in Paris?

Nina Simone is the FUCKIN' bomb!

    You should hear:
    • I Put a Spell on You
    • Here Comes the Sun
    • Ne Me Quitte'pas
    • I Got it Bad and that Good
    • Love Me Leave Me
    FUCKIN' AWESOME!

Oh, how could I be so damned stupid:
    • I Loves You Porgy
    • Seeline Woman
    ...two of her best!

I might. I do have keloid scars.

I did know about her exile. I've been a fan for a very long time. I have two of her original lp's I inherited from my father. Jazz as Played on an Exclusive Side Street Club and Nina Simone at Town Hall.

    They are treasures.

A great singer, and a volatile personality.
I knew a young woman, who happened to be black, who was briefly Ms. Simone's assistant in Paris in the mid-1980s.
She apparently had huge mood swings and was often given to slapping people.
My friend (not all that close, but more than an acquaintance) said she was slapped by NS several times before she finally quit.
She wasn't angry at her for the abuse ... she was regretful that a great artist, with something extraordinary in her personality, had such emotional difficulties.
Now, people think NS had either some degree of a bipolar problem or of borderline personality disorder.
But the lady could sure enough sing.

Her rendition of Summertime is probably my favorite recorded version.

Shelby, every once in a while you surprise me.
