This morning I was at my gym in the free weight room. Two guys in their twenties were working out together. To all appearances they are straight. Let's call them Guy #1 and Guy #2. Guy #1 is bearded and seems kind of inward. Guy #2 is outgoing and talkative. I overheard this rather sweet interchange that sadly seems quite unusual.

Guy #1: I want to sauna and shower before leaving.
Guy#2: Don't you have to be at work at 1:00? We might not have time.
Guy #1: Why are you worrying about that?
Guy#2: Because I care about you. I love you.
Guy #1: Don't say that!
Guy #2: (loudly) I'll shout it out to this whole gym. I love you, Man!
Guy #1: Now you are embarrassing me.
Guy #2: Don't be embarrassed. You're totally lovable.

Comments? I think Guy #2 could stand to be more respectful of Guy #1's apparent policy that there is a time and place.

I don't see any reason to assume either of these guys are gay based on this conversation. Most guys aren't comfortable telling their friends that they love them. The guys who can get over that immaturity and actually tell the people that they love that they love them are much healthier than the others. It's a little weird to shout it out like that, but I don't think I've ever had a friendship with another guy that didn't involve teasing each other or embarrassing each other, that's a normal part of a (non-romantic) relationship between guys.

Guys / friends , just do silly embarrassing crap to each other. Often the more embarrassing/ more in public the funnier it is

There's not enough info to make any comment. Often the way things are said, the body posture and stuff, give a clue to what's going on.

I don't think it's unusual for men to love each other. And I don't mean that in a sexual way. I've had many friends in my life I've loved and, although it wasn't spoken, I'm pretty sure it was known by them and reciprocated.

To be honest I’ve never told any of my guy friends I love them but I’ve had some I felt very strongly about, all straight. I don’t think it’s unheard of though and I would not assume either are gay based on the conversation.

I mean..I guess I see why there's such a hetero stigma against intimate male-male friendships, you can't really express it without some sort of homosexual insinuation being applied to it, hence the ridiculing of the "bromance"" or the constant, obsessive shipping of hetero male characters(Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes come to mind).
My guess is those guys were just living out their lives...they could be going home to fuck robots shaped like squid aliens for all we know.

The sentiments expressed by Guy # 2 may have been said in an effort to embarrass his friend publicly, or it may be how he really feels. As Men we are taught from an early age as Boys to be strong, tough and assertive. To be a Man and to show any other emotions like be caring, compassionate and affectionate it is viewed that a Guy is either weak or Gay. I think when we can get a place in society where men are able to be more open and expressive the better of we will be. Just my two cents!

Dave, What makes you think they are Straight as they sound like Lover to Me!!

They did not appear to be self-conscious when hanging out with the guys. I can't say whether they might play in the showers occasionally but I'm pretty sure they would call themselves straight, have steady girlfriends, etc...

I truly doubt they are lovers.

As a person who has lived in several very different cultures, I think we often are far to quick to interpret others behavior through our own cultural lens (If he does ........ He must be....). Sociologists have identified something like eleven very distinct cultures ("Nations") within the U.S. and there are an infinite number of subcultures. For example, in a gym in Tampa, which has large Cuban and Italian communities, I witnessed two young, very handsome and buff guys, with very hot girlfriends in tow, say goodbye then hug, then kiss, on the mouth before one couple left. This was right in the middle of a LARGE gym at around 7:00 PM (i.e. prime time and crowded). My guess is that the two guy were family members, perhaps brothers or cousins, and almost certainly not gay in any conventional sense of the word. Most gay guys are too worried about ridicule and/or assault to do something like that.

You are free to fantasize that they were ACTUALLY bi.

It certainly is a valid guess: I am Hispanic (living in the US) and I always kiss my brother on the cheek when saying hello/goodbye, public or not; Ditto with my male cousins, with one of them sometimes lips (and I have never stopped to think why with him and not my brother until reading this thread : P ), nothing gay about it, just fam. ... but if it strikes you off and want to get even more grossed out, know that my [guy] cousins and their mom kiss on the lips too LOL. I don't dnw : P

Well said, LilJock. There are many loves. 99 times out of 100 they are non-sexual.
