When I was young, the news was just that. News was not entertainment, not one-sided opinion. It was what actually happened in the world. It wasn't totally without bias. We always got the US version of things (unfortunately), but at least the news was nearly completely a factual presentation of what happened in the world (with the goal to be factual, not opinionated or entertaining). The opinions were a small part of the news, and they were called commentaries. The networks clearly stated that those parts of the news that were opinions, were opinions, not the news. They distinguished between the two. Also, the news was presented with a true balanced approach (not the so-called "fair and balanced" approach that fox claims; they don't present anything that is fair or balanced; they never have). The Fairness Doctrine required news organizations to present opinions from opposite points of view, not just one. The viewer could listen to those opposing view points on the news and make informed decisions for themselves. That is not the case today. This reasonable and intelligent approach to news stopped when we, in the US, were given the "gift" of the reagan regime. Those in power during that time began the destruction of the laws that required the heads of the media to be responsibile to the public by presenting the news fairly, balanced, and FACTUALLY. We have steadily gone downhill to become greedy, illogical, unreasonable, uncaring, and uninformed citizens to the point that we are nearing illiteracy, being dumbed to the pointed of seeking nothing but entertainment, and believing that we should be fearful of everything and everyone that isn't wealthy, white, christian, male, and is part of that "living being" called a corporation. The sooner we reverse this decline of our society (the orchestration of fear and creation of stupidity by the right-wing), the sooner we will become a society that puts education, caring, respect, and sharing first in the lives of its members.
