So i had to go to the doctors and today they took out 40 ml of blood from my arm and I shit you not, I passed out. I thought i was going to die, it felt like it, i had a ringing in my ear, I felt cold, and way too dizzy. i got so scared...

and the thought that ran through my head was "I'm going to die at 19, unwed and unloved..."

this was scarier than my car wreck... i was totally depressed afterwards...
I'm depressed now...
I'm going to bed.

Sinclair, did you eat before the blood draw? Some years ago I had this happen to me. I had not had anything to eat and had a blood draw for labs. I was setting at the nurses station talking to my brother and the nurses next thing I knew I was on a bed where the nurses and my brother had put me. I had no ill effects after some food. I hope this is true in your case.

Oftentimes after a blood draw, you'll get a cookie, or orange juice. The idea is to rebuild your strength. I've passed out after they drew my blood, once, too.

It is surprising that you passed out with such a small blood draw, though.

This happens to me everytime I get blood drawn. I have a huge phobia of needles.

That is probably why I'll never get a tattoo.

Some of us just can't take stuff having to do with blood ...

I once passed out in the dr's office when all they were doing was a finger stick to get a couple of drops of blood for a test. Talk about embarrassing!

I gave blood at work one time and all was good until I got to the juice & cookie table afterward and suddenly I was on the floor looking at the lights on the ceiling, lol. At the time I was passing out I felt it and said something like "I'm going out" and the blood donation crew must've moved swiftly and caught me because nothing hurt from crashing off the table or whatever. Another embarrassing moment.

Shit, I can get woozy just listening to people talk about operations or other stuff involving blood. Must be I'm not a vampire ...

So don't feel bad, some of us are just wired this way.

Not that I have the license to provide a proper diagnosis, but it sounds to me like you experienced a vasovagal response.

Many things can stimulate this response to a faint. For you, it might have been the sight of blood. Maybe it was the loss of blood (it is a bit small to stimulate a syncope, but when you lose blood volume, your blood pressure might increase a bit in order to pump blood throughout the body). This sudden change in blood pressure making you faint is probable, but unlikely.

I had this happen to me, once - kinda. It's a bit odd. A friend was telling me a extremely graphic story of how his father stuck a pole through his eye (eugh, I cringe at typing that) and... Well, I won't go into detail of what he said, but it was gruesome enough for me to use my vivid imagination and become nauseous, lightheaded, and dizzy while standing up. I could have sworn I was about to faint - I lost my balance and tripped while I was doing no more than standing. My friend sat me down and I started to feel better.

It was a weird feeling. I wouldn't go so far to compare it to dying lol, but you know, it's not very pleasant.

well the appointment was at 9 and i ate at like around 7. I had a half a cup of oatmeal. with a cup of 2% milk. and I'm not upset as much as i was before but it just puts shit into perspective. i really thought i was going to die.

okay, i'm sure that if we were all in a room, you people would be staring at me like I'm crazy.

All i remember is that I'm sitting there the nurse is half way filling up the third vile when i start feeling dizzy, and it felt like my eyes had sunken in. then my head was heavy and spinning. i look at my arm and they are still taking blood. and i wanted to say stop but nothing came out my mouth. i closed my eyes to stop spinning.

next thing i know I'm laying on one of those bed things in the next room with my legs elevated by a chair. when i finally open my eyes the nurse was standing next to me, asked if i was okay and told me to stop at the Target near by to get something to eat.

now i did eat before my appointment but I'm starting to think that i didn't eat enough. I also had like two cigarettes on my drive there.

anyways I'm happy that this is just a normal reaction, and that I'm not dead. I'm not as upset as i was before but like I said, it puts things in perspective.

This was a worse experience than when my car flipped in the freeway.

Just to clarify my post, I wouldnt think you're crazy. Did you faint during your car accident too? I'm just wondering if you're associating fainting with that near death experience.

Ah yes....... but the question everybody really wants the answer to is: Did you get a graham cracker or a cookie with your juice afterward?

no... but the male nurse was sweet enough so its okay.

I didn't faint when i had my car accident. i was actually very calm.

Oh man. I can't stand needles and have to look away when I get jabbed. I ask the nurse to talk to me to distract me and I'm fine. But I'm such a pussy when it comes to that. I don't know what I'd be like if ever hospitalized.

Even the sight of a needle, can start some folks off, and especially like my Uncle.

Me, I did have quite a rational fear of needles thanks to a dentist I used to see as a kid.

So what did I do to get over this fear?..... My old employer often used to have a Blood Donation drive on every so often, so I opted to go, and although the nurses thought it was quite a bizarre way to get over this fear, they let me donate anyway, and over 10 years later, I am still donating now.
