Maybe it is good that it completely broke. They must install a new unit now, and hopefully the person who installs it can figure out how to optimize it.

Nah, my apartments are too cheap for that. A guy came and looked at it yesterday. He's coming back today to install a new compressor on it.

I hope you don't get the weasel I had several years ago. It was General Electric A.C. and it went kaput in the first month. It was the only General Electric A.C. I ever made the mistake of buying. When it broke the fan worked but no cooling.

Still under warranty I contacted G.E. they sent someone who took the unit away. They insisted on only the main unit, not the casing.

2 weeks later it was returned. Right away I knew there was a problem. The front grill was all messed up. Turned it on and the metal grill got nice and cold. There was a problem though. The fan no longer worked.

My partner of the time, called G.E. and was very mad and threatened to expose them if they didn't straighten this mess out. They complied and the following night they shipped a new unit up from Kentucky. Today is actually the anniversary of that. I always remember it because the 4th of July was going to be very hot that year and at 7 p.m. the delivery was made on the 3rd of July.

It lasted 20 years with very heavy usage. I got rid of it when I had to replace a window and decided it was old and loud and there were better models out there now that used less electric.

I refused to get another G.E. Even though the replacement was wonderful, the original and the way they messed it up even more instead of repairing it, made me steer clear of them.

I hope your a.c. issues get resolved as this is a very warm summer in most places in the U.S.

I am feel the same way about shoddy service.

I have Amana PTAC units like the ones in hotel rooms in my house. It is more efficient than having a central unit for a house as old as mine. I can keep certain areas cool, and let the other parts of the house get warm when I am not using them.

For sure, it's going to be a hot 4th of July this year!

Well they replaced the compressor today and it seems to be running better. It hasn't gotten any warmer than 79 in here, and it hit 102 degrees outside. So that's good! It hasn't worked this well in years. Lol. It's about 77 in here currently. The a/c is also consistently blowing 50 degree air, where it would previously warm up as it got warmer outside (to about 60 degrees) then cool back down (to about 55 degrees) as the day progressed.

Not perfect of course, but certainly better than it was. I won't be complaining. :)

Here is a couple of things that worked for me before i got A/C, tape some aluminum foil up "next to the glass" in all window that bring sun in. by reflecting the sun back before it gets to the curtain it will keep the heat on the outside .... if you have a bathroom fan "Turn it on heat rises and the fan is usually on the ceiling. ( you may also have a fan above your kitchen stove that is vented outdoors, turn it on also and blow circulating fans from the kitchen back thru the house on the floor. the coolest air is on the floor always, by directing your fans away from the "exiting fans" you create an internal circulation thru the whole house. put mattresses on the floor it is the coolest place for sleeping. Hope it helps:)
