I really wonder if the upcoming election would be as close as it is if Obama was White, any thoughts on this?

    Race card AGAIN!!??? REalLy??

Is it so hard to believe that there are people out here in American who haven't drank the Obama juice and who just think differently than you do?? Who just think he's incompetent regardless of his skin color??

I don't care if he was pink, I'm still not voting for him, because I don't agree with his policies.

Do you mean would white folks with basically racist tendencies
    be so vehemently against Obama?
The answer to that is of course no.
Then he would be just another democratic nominee.
    No more no less.

Currently, the election isn't remotely close. Every major poll shows Obama ahead.

I think Obama's race gives him a bump in some areas, and a lag in others.

:lmao: Everybody forgets he is half white; just like they forget Halle Berry is half white. Being black is like Bryl Cream a l'il dab will do you.

Though to take the OP's "what if" to it's silly extreme. 'What if Barack Obama were 100% white and were still married to the tall and beautiful Michelle Obama.'

Could Americans vote for a man who dared marry out of his race?

yes, you see my point! people make generalizations so often that they see past what's underneath. it drives me bat-shit crazy. obama is neither one more than the other, he is both.

Yup, just because some people turn into 7 year old girls and their days-of-the-week panties get in a bundle when race is brought up doesn't mean EVERYONE has to shy away from it. Some of us are actually mature enough to deal with the discussion. Of course some of us aren't and that's just fine and dandy like sour candy.

Vaginas get talked about several times a day and nobody says "Vaginas...again??!?!?!!!!!?!?!??!!?!?!!" If race bothers you, don't click on threads about race. It's that simple, no need for all the damn dramatics.

Nope, we're aware. Is it hard to believe that there are people out here in America who don't like him because of his skin color?

Why do you say "half", and not "five-eighths"?

This is true. I have a racist aunt who was for Hillary Clinton in the primaries but I'm pretty sure she won't vote for Obama. (Actually, I was surprised to find out that there were ANY Democrats in my extended family! :biggrin1: I thought I was the only one...Although I hesitate to compare myself with a racist aunt...)

This is probably true. It probably evens out about the same.

It's not about race bothering me.

I don't think that Race has had any impact whatsoever on Obama's campaign.. so the fact that people are still bringing it up is just ridiculous, he's way ahead in the polls.

He's probably going to win.. I may have to leave the country, we won't know for days, but the point is that the argument doesn't hold water. It didn't hold water in the primaries, and it doesn't hold water now. White people, black people, yellow people, all kinds of people are voting for him.. so i'm saying get over it. He's probably going to get elected.

Well, see, Barack Obama calls himself black, and I feel like anyone who deigns to correct him on his own race is being technical. So, are you sure you have the right fraction, or is "half" a guess on your part?

That is 100% illogical, it would ONLY be plausible in one of the following situations, if:

    1. Racism didn't exist
    2. If the only people who are racist are under the age of 18 and can't vote.

If, by some odd chance, there are racist people over the age of 18 then racism DIRECTLY affects his campaign because he doesn't have a fair chance at a racists' vote. Seriously, did you not pay attention in Civics?

It won't affect his campaign too much but to say that racism doesn't affect Obama's campaign wins the Ignorant Statement of the Year award. If racism exists, how would it NOT affect his campaign? Do racists say "You know what, let's give him a fair chance."?

God I wish people would think before they speak (or post) and is it too much to ask someone to post with common sense and not their (paper-thin) emotions?

    You probably won't.

First of all Mccain shouldn't be counted out, second of all, are you saying that if he does win, it excuses racism because it wasn't enough to keep him from winning the presidency?

If Obama was white, I would look at him as another white politician that is full of empty promises and has not real "plan" for any of the major issues that confront us today.

And no, I'm not voting for McCain either.

You've missed my point (admittedly, it's late and I didn't make it well...).

Have you ever described someone as a "half-brunette" when one parent was blond? If you knew a person with one blond parent who claimed to be a brunette, would you contradict that person? If you're comfortable identifying hair or eye color by phenotype, why fractionalize skin color?

Obama doesn't refer to himself as "half"-anything: he's a black man with a white mother.

Saying "half-white" or "biracial" will save you a breath or two.

Besides, the whole 1-drop/paperbag test/etc... all come from an era where there was an ulterior motive for identifying blacks.

How many people really look at him as being "half white", stop the bullshit people, or maybe I should rephrase it , "what if Obama was totally White"

It's not bullshit. To me, there's a bit of an irony here. Obama is the product of two ethnicities, the one that disappeared and showed up once or twice is the one he's associated with because of physicl features. The one that worked hard to support him and put him through lawschool is being discredited and swept under the rug, again, because of physical traits. If I was Obama's mother I'd be pissed.

Guess we'll never know, will we?

Lets make this explicitly clear, it is Mr. Obama who characterizes himself as African American, not the American People. So if anyone is sweeping the white under the rug, it's Mr. Obama.

I know that was hard to swallow, take another drink of the Obama juice and you'll forget all about it. I think the other sheep are waiting for you, you should go.

Interestingly, I don't think he has ever called himself that. An American of African decent, yes but that's entirely true. African American is probably true as well.
