If you had the Chimp Attack injuries, would you want to live?

I'm afraid I'm not that brave. I didn't even open the link.

that was a wise move :frown1::frown1::frown1:

if you looked at the picture i posted of Gary Oldman in Hannibal, than imagined him without eyes, or nose and mouth...then made it even more awful and swollen, you would have a slight idea what this poor woman looked like. :frown1::frown1::frown1:

To think that chimpanzees are our closest living cousins...

I knew orang outangs could turn lethally violent, but I had no clue a chimp could inflict so much damage.

I certainly don't think $150m (assuming the sum she is seeking is awarded to her) will ever offset the loss of quality of life she is enduring.

Actually, genetically orangutans are likely genetically closer. :) Anyway, her wounds are really bad. Hopefully there can be some plastic surgery done to improve her quality of life. It's sad, certainly.

Orangutans May Be Closest Human Relatives, Not Chimps

i love orangutans...they are largely solitary, unlike chimps who are very social, gregarious and live in troops. sometimes a couple of females loosely congregate but not often.

chimps are much more hyper and active than orangs, who are rather quiet, and stay mostly in the trees.

I <3 orangs too, they are my fav. I've always wanted to go to Borneo or Sumatra to one of the rehabiliatation centers to be a foster mom to one of the orphaned baby orangs...I'm a dork.

just about the only time i found Julia Roberts interesting, was when she travelled to do a documentary on an Orang sanctuary, where she lived there for a few days...she had an encounter with a resident male orang that was terrifying for her...it was an amazing encounter.

considering male orangs are twice as big as male chimps, and male chimps are about 5 times as strong as a man, this is rather sobering

well, this should be an indication of just how strong orangs are in just their hands, arms and and upper body and torso alone...

here is an adult female female orang, that barely has to make an effort, at 180 pounds to pull a 363 pound sumo wrestler, using all his strength. into the mud...one can only imagine the strength of a 280 pound male orang, like in the julia roberts video

YouTube - Sumo Wrestler VS. Orangutan

interestingly, orangs are generally thought of as being more advanced than chimps, and are regarded as the most intelligent non-human species on the planet.

they have higher learning abilities, as well as a deeper understanding of problem solving...

the cutest thing i have ever seen is they make themselves little "rain hats" out of leaves and they even make little roofs over their tree beds that keep rain off of them

Chimps are extremely dangerous animals. My boyfriend talked my ear off about this incident for weeks, and about the violent nature of chimps! They're smart and when they figure out that you're holding them captive and that they can overpower you, they will. And they always go for fingers, nose and eyes first, even when they're attacking prey in the jungle. They want to make your life not worth living if you do make it out alive.

The hospital she was taken to has done a face transplant before. That may yet be an option for her.

The only thing they might be able to do is make her look less frightening (her words) to other people.

She has no eyes, no normal mouth (she eats through a straw) and no hands (just one thumb remains).

well, there is no doubt that they have the ability to be dangerous, especially adult males, but to suggest that all captive chimps are merely waiting for an attempt to overpower and attack you is not correct.

while captivity is certainly not the ideal environment for a chimp, females and youngsters are not just waiting to be violent. they are wild animals, and anything could set them off, but it is not regular for females and adolescents to just become violent...

as for attacks, they also go for the groin...this is not because they "want to make your life not worth living if you survive" it is merely the fact that going for the most vulnerable part of an opponent is the surest way to disable an opponent.

they do not attack prey in the jungle like that at all, since they only attack much smaller species of monkey and other creautres and when they do, they are small enough that they are easily overcome.

they have no natural enemies, there is no prey that is their size, so the only enemies are other chimps, and attacking the genitals, hands, eyes and nose, is the way to disable an enemy in fights which many times, can be life and death.

they do not do it to be malicious. if you are being attacked, as a human, the wisest thing you can do is attack the most vulnerable parts of your attackers body...those spots which will allow you to win, or to buy yourself time to escape, or blunt the ability of the attacker to harm you.

a chimp who attacks another chimp and can blind them, or disable their hands, will prevail and survive.

chimpanzee violence and politics of chimp sociey is well documented by Goodal and others...

chimp attacks on humans are very rare, relative to the amount of chimp-human interaction, though there have been many cases of adult chimps snatching infants ffrom people and eating them...because they infant human is viewed as nothing more than the prey item of another species

it is instinct, not maliciousness.

Very few things have driven me to complete and utter sadness that way that video of that lady just did. I have seen beheadings, murdered children, dismembered bodies....this just broke my heart. I dont care why she had the chimp, i dont care what the chimp was capable of- either way- this poor lady doesnt even look human anymore. It brings me to tears really. And my medical knowledge leads me to believe that she will have many phases of her face development as time goes on. This is still fresh and its going to take some time to get graftings, fat, bone, etc to look semi-human again.

I have more respect for The Ophrah for having her do this privately without an audience to shriek. I think i'll be donating some money to her cause.....

In the wild, chimps are not usually violent, but every now and again, a group of young males will go out hunting for a male chimp from another band. They'll chase him down and beat him to death, chewing off hands, feet, genitals etc. So far no-one's come up with a reason why they do it, but it happens. They do the same with baboons. I can't say I've heard of an adult human being attacked by chimps in the wild, but there are plenty of stories of babies and children being taken and eaten.A lot of chimps in rescue centres have been placed there because their owners became frightened of them when the formerly cute and cuddly baby turned into a powerful, aggressive adolescent. There have been quite a few attacks on humans by captive chimps and they'll continue to happen until people realise that a chimp isn't really a good idea for a pet.

Then they are malicious by nature. And sorry for using the word "prey" when indeed I should've said "enemies".

they are not malicious...that is a very childish view to take.

Malicious = Having the nature of or resulting from malice; deliberately harmful; spiteful: hateful

they are not malicious.

I am in awe of this womans courage, and respect and envy her ongoing "will to live" amidst this horrific event. I am NOT that brave, and wouldnt want to live a life in her condition, basically a constant life of medical procedures. I suspect a major part of her unbelievable attitude lies in her daughter, and the desire to be there to guide her thru life. Its self-less love. Just unbelieveable !!!

They are deliberately harmful and therefore malicious.

They deliberately seek out other chimps and large primates (hey isn't that what us humans are?) to mangle and kill them.

The argument I'm making is that they are very dangerous animals and make piss-poor pets. Great if someone has one and it doesn't go apeshit but when it does happen, you have to shoot it and that's a sorry reason to have to kill an animal.
