I found Switzerland to be a very pleasant, if somewhat boring, place to live when I was there. It had enough eccentricities to keep me interested. The cleanliness thing being one of them. I swear to god you could perform heart surgery on the street. It started fucking with my head though; I'd routinely clean my apartment before the cleaning woman would arrive.

i love living in the Bahamas (lived here all my life) but i would love to love in Nice, France on the French Riviera. It's beautiful and decadent there.

or in Monaco, a rich looking place with a sense of familiarity to it.

(i've been to both places)

or wherever Casino Royale was filmed (somewhere in the Czech Republic) or where The Talented Mr. Ripley was filmed (which was somewhere in Italy)

That's a good point. Paris is a great city to visit but I... etc. I found the French became pleasant right around Digne and then downright friendly as I reached the riviera. Fantastic countryside and nice people. I really liked Monaco. It has a very interesting history and was spotlessly clean. The Monegasques were very warm and welcoming; even to a peon like me.

I prefer Europe to anywhere else, so I won't be moving.

I could live in Hanoi, and would love to visit New Zealand and Canada, which for some strange reason has slipped through my travels. Shanghai has been an amazing place to have visited regularly during the last ten years.

I haven't been to the States during the Bush Administration and tbh, I haven't missed it. That doesn't mean that I don't like the States or US'ers, just that the world is a big place and there are lots of other great places to be.

As Vince said, Istanbul, is a must visit City.

I have the choice NOT to live in the USA and therefore I do not. I'm still a US citizen, but life -- for me -- is much more liberating in Spain and Argentina. It never ceases to sadden me that when I return to the USA I know there are people with whom I do business who would kill me simply because I'm gay. For such a "fabulous" place, the USA is not as open and free a society as it was in the 1960's through the 1990's.

Then again, I would never consider living in any part of the U.K., either.

Monaco was wonderful. everytime i looked around, there was some sort of magificient view. i knew that i could live there when i walked around the place and found this wonderfully hidden, and homely bakery which served some of the most delicious treats. if i ever make it big, i'm going to live there in the summer.

along with being in Nice, because it's so close by, and i know that the Riviera is my kind of place. the beach kind of scared me though because the water was so dark compared to what i am used to in the Bahamas.

I have lived in the UK and USA, and if I was able to make the choice (damn the immigration and visas) I would move back to the states in a heartbeat. I just prefer the way of life over there, everything is a little less serious in the states. Also, they do have Wendy's hamburgers, which is quite frankly the deciding factor!

Let's hope the new president will recognise the need for a change in immigration regarding gay couples.

Mine too. I'd love to spend a few months just traveling the entire French and Italian rivieras. There is a culture in Monaco that's distinct from France but you have to look for it, mostly in the small shops and churches the locals frequent. Amazing seafood at the little spots! Imagine French and Italian influences coming together with hundreds of years of refinement. Monaco is a special place. I find the microstates fascinating anyway, but little Monaco is one tough nut. Somehow it survives!

I DO live in 'another country' and it's great in someways and not all it is cracked up to be in others.

This is the second foreign (to me) country I have lived in and I've spent significant chunks of time in another 2. It's funny - all the other places were cities and the country to country change is not as big a culture shock as the urban to rural change. You want to move to a 'different country' without crossing a border? - go urban to rural or vice versa.

In terms of another move, I was in the Carolinas recently and I think I could be quite hapy there - though that'd be more for the company than the scenery  (though it is very lovely down there). I've always had a yen for New Zealand as well - I've never even visited, but I think I'm going to rectify that in the next 5 years.

Quite honestly part of me wants to go home to Ireland - a lot has changed there since I left and, fortunately, the good changes seem to outweigh the bad. But I don't think I will go home, not yet - mainly because I can't afford to (Ireland is so fucking expensive!). Still, everytime I visit back I get a huge kick from flying into Dublin and seeing it all from the air, or driving up the east coast from the ferry port if I sail in and seeing the Dublin mountains hove into view. It'll always be home.

I've lived in France and could go back there in a heartbeat.
England was a place I felt at home.
Holland very much so.
*snip*
At the end of the day, though, I've always said if I won a lottery, I would be heading back to France pronto.

Would you? Well, do stop in for aperitifs, dear boy!

I've spent time in the same countries (though probably different parts in all cases) and I would definitely consider a move to Holland. It is very different from how it is portrayed and thought of - it's actually a deeply conservative country but with true liberalism a very important part of legislation. It seems to work very well for them.

I agree...I'd go to France in a heartbeat. An apartment in Paris would be a little slice of heaven, particularly one in the 7er.

*ahem* That's the 7ème, dear

Greece or Turkey in a hearbeat.

Both had wonderful people, both had a rich history I'd love to learn more about, both had breathtaking scenery.

Santorini has been a pipe dream of mine for some time but the more I think about it the more Istanbul appeals to me. The greenery and landscape reminds me of Halifax, the historical architecture isn't charming so much as it is awe inspiring and the driving there is ever so slightly less suicidal than in Greece.

Yes, i enjoyed Greece, especially Iraklion (think thats how its spelt) and Turkey Gumbet, but i may be selfish but i would like holiday homes there, Like i said earlier i love the states, love the food, especially the "Dunkin Donuts" , Wendy's the Paninis, everything is so big in the States and i ain't just talking about the willies either, so choice for me -

NYC/ the penthouse in the Helmsley Park lane would suit :biggrin1: until i found something i would like.
Turkey/Greece to have a holiday home.
I fancy a apartment in Dallas.

Guess i better start saving:wink:

I like the Côte d'Azur as well. I spend two weeks there every September. The coast is very beautiful and the nightlife is par excellence. But the water is heavily polluted. I have seen turds floating past on the beach in Cannes. I really wouldn't want to live there full time. The mountain villages above the coast are really charming and life is slow. In September-October when the weather cools and most of the tourists have gone, it is a great place to hang and tour around. Sopele is one of my favorite places and has the best pizza restaurant in France. (IMO)

I've always wanted to go to Argentina. How is life there?

Amen to that! I'm a US citizen but my partner is not. We can't live in the States even if we wanted to (which we do).

I find all this talk of living in different countries interesting... but I think most people don't realize just how difficult it is to legally enter and stay long-term in another country.

No, I would not want to live in any other country. I am happy in the U.S. and will be moving to South Florida in a few months. This is as tropical as you can get in the 48 contiguous states.

I do have the choice and I hope to move to the US as soon as legally possible; it's certainly not a fast process, unfortunately.
There are many things about the US which I don't like, but their are about England too. My biggest problem with America is, quite frankly, the second ammendment. Fortunately, they grow good pussy over their so who am I to complain?

I've always enjoyed the thought of living in western continental Europe, that is Spain, France or Italy. Whenever I've been to Monaco/Monte Carlo it's always been great, but hell if I could afford to live there on even a short-term basis.
I enjoy the pace of life, climate and more relaxed/liberal attitude I often encounter when visiting these places. My circadian rhythm has never been correctly aligned to our 24 hour clock cycle, and siestas are a wonderful way to instill a natural routine into my life.

Italy would be my first choice of the three - specifically Tuscanny, Liguria or even Piedmont - even though I speak virtually none of the language. (Spain can be a little too arid for my tastes, and France doesn't quite seem as 'Mediterranean' as it once was.)
Italian is without a doubt my favourite cuisine and that, tied with with the topography & geography of northern Italy is more than enough for me.

Which ultimately protects us from the tyranny of our governments and serves to provide personal security. If you think we all walk around with guns strapped to our sides, you're mistaken. I'm a bit surprised at this.

You should always be able to return to the UK, or anywhere else in the EU. Just be sure you both have dual passports. In that you will be very lucky. I'd kill to be a dual passport holder.

Besides, if you get nostalgic for home you can always fly out to Bermuda (just 2 hours away) where they are still veddy British. The ginormous portrait of HM in HM's customs hall, the pubs, the money, the crown cipher on everything, the Governor's Daimler, and even driving on the wrong side of the road, will make you feel very much at home.

Bermuda (ahem) makes a great honeymoon spot.

Fortunately, they grow good pussy over their so who am I to complain?

Don't be around when she reads that....:wink:

I think that even though America is fucked up at times. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Before 9-11, America wasn't so bad. I came out of the closet during the AIDS crisis. My overall optimism was greater then than now.

I don't feel as happy and as enthusiastic now considering all that is happening in the world. Sometimes, I would like have reset button pushed in and have everything better in the world.

I like America. I love the Constitution of the United States...better than the Bible.
