Of course there is. It's really easy to pander to people's fears and lack of knowledge to spark reactions especially if it's only about temporary gain.
How many politicians have suffered because they underestimated the intelligence of the voters? Not many. People get the leaders they deserve.
Although I agree with the first part of your statement, in some ways I disagree with the second part. Many people do know who is worthy of supporting when it comes to elections. Alas, because politicians are so good at manipulating people to vote out of fear and lack of knowledge everyone else suffers as well. That's all speculative of course, because I know there's many people who would see what I stand for and think it's a bunch of bollocks.
