So here is my question. Why do the majority of Americans glorify celebrities and Athletes. Like they always do this. and these famous people end up believing they are above the law. I just don't get it.

I'm American, and I don't glorify them.

And Americans are not the only ones guilty of this. Think about Brazil and Pele.
About the UK and Beckham.

Its a form of nationalism, tribalism, and vicarious fantasy.

Its as common as dirt.

Media propaganda. Dumbing down of society.Rampant consumerism.
If the rabble knew the true state of the world there would be mayhem.
And after all, that's what sells.

Kansas city shuffle? -Can be used in relation to anything involving distraction and misdirection by which you get everyone to look one way, while whatever you're doing involves going the other way.

Same reason people always need an evil doer to hate. Thats why most movies without a clear villain are seen as the best, because its new. New aka real. Real aka truer than most.

And/or just nothing else better to do.

(And people talk shit about pokemon.)

Who are these Americans, I live here and I do not know any ??

I said majority... not everyone is like this but there are a lot and i mean a lot of people who go gaga for celebrities.

I'm American, and I don't glorify them.

Well it's one thing to like an icon but some people go as far as buying merchandise or following people on tweeter. i mean like my boyfriend and I are the only people i know from my generation that don't have twitter. kind of the reason why i like him but it's crazy. like i never understood why people watch tmz. i mean i don't care what celebrities wear or where they eat. like a good example would be how Pix11 is. ugh. lol

Yeah, but we've now put ones up there that don't even actually do anything. I had to stand in line somewhere yesterday with two different mainstream magazines with Kim Kardashian on the cover, staring me in the face. WTF is wrong with people these days?

Are we the only ones so deep into reality celebrities?

In the first place "glorify" I think is an oversimplification, secondly, it's not strictly an American thing. People all over the world have their "celebrities". (The UK's royal family immediately comes to mind.)

Also remember that some of those we "lift up" often fall QUITE swiftly and heavily when the "tides" (or time) changes in their disfavor. (Poor Justin.)

Granted though, some of the damndest people seem to obtain "celebrity" status these days. Credit that to today's INSTANT media, ESPECIALLY the internet and "reality" t.v.

We don't knight our stars though. We only glorify them because they've followed out their dreams in what they want to become. As children we're told to become what we want to be, strive for the stars, don't let anybody tell you that you can't do what you want.

So, those people who've followed those rules, make it big and it's not everyday that somebody turns into a Jay-Z, Beyonce, Brad Pitt, Mat Damon, Bret Favre, Tim Tebow, etc. etc. - As for above the law, I'm lost with that comment. Our stars and celebrities get caught doing stupid shit all the time (Lindsay Lohan  McCaughly Colken )

Hmm, glorify - well, maybe not, but "immense interest" is perhaps quite true.

I think this may stem from the Americans not having Royalty. JFK seems to have stepped into that position when he was President of the United States.

I have no clue. I'm American, but I don't give a fuck about famous people. I don't give a shit what goes on in their personal lives. It gets hilarious when someone asks me "what do you think about 'so-and-so'(random celebrity, I don't even know who's popular right now)" and I tell them "I don't even know who that is" they look at me like I'm an alien. Funny shit.

Most famous people are famous because they met the right people and had the right look. There are SOOO many talented people who have done the hard work for Years, and never got 'discovered'. Fame mostly is because of luck and hard work combined, but rarely JUST because of hard work.

They get caught, and they usually don't get any real punishment. They get a slap on the wrist most of the time. No matter harsh the crime.

I don't get the people that are famous for being famous. WTF is that about?

I'll admit that when I was younger I was all about getting pictures and autographs. But now that I'm older, I realize they are just normal people with attention getting jobs. No better or worse than any of the rest of us.

I think some celebrities are incredible talents (athletes, singers, actors, etc), but there are other occupations that deserve more attention. We should put our teachers and public servants on pedestals.

I think I snapped out of it around 25...I was in the front row of a concert and the lead singer acknowledged my friends and me. We freaked out like 12 year olds for about 30 seconds...then I just stopped and realized how ridiculous it was. This guy was the same age as me and the ONLY thing that made him famous was that he was a singer. Since then I could care less.

That pretty much sums up how I feel about the whole cult of celebrity too. I find it pretty galling that a lot of these "stars" on top of their earnings also get a huge income out of freebies at award ceremonies and get paid for making guest appearances at whatever function. Yes, they have a talent for entertaining people and I respect them for that, but I have a lot more respect for teachers, social workers, nurses, police and firefighters, as well as the people holding down two or three minimum-wage jobs so that their children can have a decent standard of living.

To my mind, the worst "celebs" are those who are famous for being famous, the socialites, who are basically just whores, and those who became famous for having sex with someone famous.

Yes, there are some extremely talented actors, singers and musicians out there, but these days the entertainment industry seems to be dominated by pretty people who have been "discovered" rather than those who have worked hard for years, learning the craft and honing their skills. That type of "celebrity" is probably much easier for agents to market and make a quick buck out of than the genuine talents, which is why the airwaves are full of them and their meaningless autotuned warbling.
