In absolute worst-case scenario, Ron Paul just tied for first in Iowa and Minnesota.

It's probably for different reasons...but I am in full agreement with you, tamati.

Ron Paul knows what he believes, and has been consistent about it for decades. (the 100 years comment was sarcastic...) And, as a libertarian (even though I *know* he's running on the Republican ticket) he's on the opposite end of the spectrum from President Obama.

A contrast between the two would be extremely interesting.

I like the implication that a highly educated intellectual like Obama needs a teleprompter to talk, as if every president for decades hasn't used one, tied into support of a known racist like Paul.

I mean, he's sure he's very articulate for one of his people, but it's all on the screen, eh?

The purpose of a debate is not sympathy. It's not to provide the media with something they can spin as a positive. It's to discuss, openly and at odds, the differing viewpoints of the participants.

I agree that shouldn't be the purpose of debates--but all of the abovementioned points are certainly the outcome of them. Debates are supposed to be forums for candidates to state and defend their platform and interests, but they have turned into little more than pissing contests and boo-hoo parties. Remember when Lloyd Bentsen informed Dan Quayle that his name wasn't Jack Kennedy? Ol' Lloyd went from unknown to news du'jour overnight. Remember when Bill Clinton (master actor that he is) took Dubya's daddy to task for being a big, bad, snobby Republican who tried to call him unpatriotic and dig up dirt on his poor, country mama's background? It made George look like the Big Bad Wolf and made Clinton look like an unfairly accused yokel who was being picked on by a well-heeled octogenarian from the Planet Dillweed.

I would be interested to watch Ron Paul debate anyone--that guy has quirks galore.

One of his people? Oh crap, you must be even worse than a birther...you think he's a space alien?

I presume that your own racism is causing you to see it in others. I differ from our President in terms of ideology. But, if you've ever heard him speak without the benefit of a teleprompter, he tends to wander all over the place, never managing to stay on subject.

Being well educated does not automatically make one an effective public speaker. Being able to read a speech from a teleprompter is not the same thing. And yes, he does much better with the teleprompter, than without it.

Now, enough with the veiled attempts to imply that all who disagree with the President are racist. I couldn't care less about the amount of melanin in his skin. Is it so impossible for you to believe that I disagree with him *philosophically?*

(Just as a point of reference, RonPaul has even more impressive credentials, including a PhD. Yep, Doctor Paul...and he's a veteran, too.)

I think he's also the only person Obama wouldn't make look like either a fool or a scumbag in a debate.

Actually, Obama would make Ron Paul look like an extremist, ignorant, and dangerous moron in any debate.

Ron Paul's great asset- his honesty about what he truly believes, is also his greatest liability.

All Obama would have to do is challenge him on his positions on rescuing the US car industry, how the US economy exceeds the entire world supply of gold, the killing of Bin Laden, and the total failure of Ayn Rand inspired economic policy... and Paul would come off looking like the kind of sputtering imbecile that would name his son after an openly fascist third rate novelist.

Paul was not against the killing of bin laden, just using bin laden as an excuse to expand into war. I could go on and on (solyndra, extremist czars, shovel ready jobs, trampling of liberties, his crack down on drugs, overriding his own food and drug administration, trampling on civil liberties, etc)...

But Paul would only have to do one thing. Hold up a constitution and ask Obama to read it sometime...

I differ from our President in terms of ideology. But, if you've ever heard him speak without the benefit of a teleprompter, he tends to wander all over the place, never managing to stay on subject.

Please provide an example of such "wandering." And sensitivity to the nuances and complexities of an issue doesn't count.

Being well educated does not automatically make one an effective public speaker. Being able to read a speech from a teleprompter is not the same thing. And yes, he does much better with the teleprompter, than without it.

The entire country heard him speak without benefit of a teleprompter during the six-plus hours live televised healthcare summit. Obama took the worst his opponents could throw at him and more than held his own defending an extremely complex 2,400-page bill. At the end, the only real criticism even the most conservative media could aim at him was that he had *too* much to say on the topic and didn't give his own supporters a chance to jump in.

So yeah, I think he does just fine without a teleprompter.

how the US economy exceeds the entire world supply of gold
Thats purely a question of price. You can describe all global trade in gold if you really want 1:1 but its going to need a high price to do so.
Entirely possible but unlikely as most of us are paupers who just want to buy some food. Thats not a good gold necessary transaction normally
What more likely is gold gets only used sometimes as a security.

At the moment nobody is calling bluff on dollars but they have done elsewhere when that country seriously lacks enough trade in exchange for its imports.
USA is a giant importer so its arguable Ron Paul is only stating not a personal opinion but an estimate of future events.
We can still admit that and say who gives a dam, we'll just refuse to pay. The political biased opinions of every single candidate is secondary and unimportant to future events, they are just players

If Ron Paul got close to winning he'd probably be assassinated in a way that would probably be made to look like an act of terrorism so the powers that be could immediately suspend the rule of law, shut the internet down, and start rounding people up.

A guy who stood for individual liberty would end up being used to justify taking away our individual liberties.

BTW: No matter how I die, it was murder; if I vanish -- it wasn't willingly :D

I do think the Republicans will lose fairly bad this election, but I also think Ron Paul debating Obama would have been interesting. Ron's fairly well-spoken and what he'd say would probably strike a chord with a great many Americans. I think a lot of Americans would vote Republican because they agreed with their candidate, rather than because they wanted to get Obama out of office. If Romney goes toe-to-toe with Obama in an open unscripted debate, he'll get slaughtered so bad it'll make Custer's Last Stand look like a pretty sweet victory.

Neither can function without Teleprompters. No one in politics can any more.

I've watched Obama and Romney both stumble and stammer without them, but I've also seen Obama be eloquent and well-spoken when he doesn't have them. He at least has a basic idea of what he's trying to say. I get the feeling Romney is trying to stand for whatever the party tells him to, and more of what he says publicly is purely an act. He comes off as an idiot and/or an asshole quite often even with the teleprompters.
