Thanks Davey, I'm glad you said it. A thread which began with a courteous post quickly degenerated into vitriol. Interesting ... and very 'un-LPSG', I would have thought.

Agreed and very sad.

It's a shame that whatever the topic some people look for an excuse to turn it nasty. There are times when nasty is warranted but usually not. Says a lot about those folks IMO

Today marks the tenth anniversary of the death of Princess Diana.

I thank her for the wonderful work she did on behalf of people affect with AIDS and horrid deaths caused by land mines. She broke a number of rules dealing with the Royal Family and brought a beautiful sincere personality to causes she believed in. She forced the world to deal with problems facing it.

I continue to miss her and her radiant smile
Diana was not perfect, nor is anyone. She made her share of mistakes as all public figures do. But overall she contributed more to the monarchy than she took away from it. In America, the flag, the Statue of Liberty and George Washington are symbols of our nation they are sacred.

The continued presence of the monarchy for over a thousand years is a symbol to the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia and to a lesser extent all of the British Commonweath of Nations.

Diana performed her two most important duties to the subjects of Queen Elizabeth. She gave birth to two very handsomd and very bright sons. She became a symbol to the younger generations that rivaled the symbol that the Queen Mother provided to the older generation all the way until her death at 101.

Diana was a symbol for millions of people. All cultures have o have symbols that they can identify with to survice. Diana did help modernize the monarchy.

For me, it was the Queen Mother and the Queen that represented that so much to me as an American. But for younger people it was Diana.

It is interesting that the great symbols of the British monarchy include Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria, the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana.

At least here in America, I don't know of any kings that rival those ladies. My hat is off to all of them.

Diana, rest in peace. I hope your sons remember the good that you did, and forget the mistakes that you made.

Let those without sin cast the first stone.

I watched "The Queen" last night. I think it is really a good film. I had forgot all the outpouring of so many people. It is interesting that even today...magazines know if they put her on the cover it will sell. It is always interesting to see an iconic image formed within our pop culture...so sad it happened because a life was cut down short. Very sad to me even after all these years.

I wasn't a great admirer of Princess Diana, however she was a young woman who had everything to live for and the sense of shock among the British public when she died was felt everywhere, like her or not she'd been on tv so much for so long that you felt you actually knew her.

The film 'The Queen' is historical fiction, most of the characters are more than a bit caricitured, some entirely. The way the late Queen Mother, for example, was portrayed had nothing in common with the real person.

(parts of it were filmed in a house that was built by a distant relative:wink:)
