In unspectacular nonirony, Republicans fail to acknowledge the clean-up effort.

In this thread, starinvestor twists the fact that there was some trash left on the Capitol Mall after Tuesday's inauguration into an indictment of the entire progressive environmental agenda.

What neither starinvestor, nor any of the other usual suspects, have fairly acknowledged is the huge volunteer effort on the part of progressives to clean up the mall:

  • The carpet on which Barack Obama was sworn in? Recycled.
  • The manure from the horses? Sold to local farms.
  • The volunteer group Trust for the National Mall donated 12,000 translucent bags for volunteers to use while cleaning up. (The Secret Service specified that the bags had to be see-through as a security precaution.) (source for the above three items)
  • The number of volunteers cleaning up the mall? "Several hundred". (source)
  • More than half of the trash was removed in the first twelve hours.
  • Plans are already underway to re-sod the National Mall within the 'next few days'. (source for the previous two items)
Being green doesn't require that one produces zero waste; it requires responsible management of the waste that is produced. We are, indeed, seeing that responsible management happening.

Thanks for that Mindseye. By the time I left yesterday it was looking entirely presentable (I don't mean to imply that I was responsible, just that I observed it) if a little ragged. But that's what 3,000,000 happy feet will do.

Now, can we put this tired subject to bed?

Funnier than the political clean-up required of the international mess created by the Bush administration.

You mean to tell me a clean up was NECESSARY

LMAO! That's the funniest part!

I fail to see the humor in anything so unremarkable as the need to clean up the site following a massive gathering of people. It's fairly consistent with the phenomenon.

When something so utterly mundane amuses you to such a degree, what a sadly pathetic existence you live.

What is it with you conservatives and the lack of common sense?

A cleanup after a large social gathering of people is NOT a political issue. Period.

You don't know if I'm conservative or not. Maybe I'm just some dude likes to laugh at so call "environmentally conscience" fools when they leave their trash behind instead of recycling it like they piss and preach about.

Just like you don't know if the people present were environmentally conscious or not?

Nope, I'm going with "small-minded troll who's too ignorant to recognize the obvious irony of his stupid remarks" FTW.

You don't know if I'm conservative or not.

Actually, I don't give a damn about your political affiliation.
But considering your rantings on the Politics forum are firmly entrenched in the rhetoric of the right, what am I supposed to go by? Your "good looks and charm"?

Considering that you fail to use basic common sense, I doubt that you're "environmentally conscience". That would require some level of intellectual thought, and you're clearly not demonstrating it. Call it a hunch, but me thinks you're just the ghost of a previously exterminated LPSG Political Forum Troll. Or one that will probably be stomped out very soon. Please do your part in proving this wrong by acting like a person with a brain. I know, I know... TOO difficult for some people. But give it a try.

I've seen a rich white lady in SUV at the supermarket parking lot open their car door scoop out her floorboard trash and drive away, Bush sticker on the bumper.

I've seen a black family throw out MickeyD's wrappers and cups while driving out of that parking lot with an Obama sticker on the bumper.

What we need is national brainwashing to make a comeback: "Give a hoot don't pollute," and "Only you can prevent forest fires." Those were cleaner days. I saw more people bend over and pick up garbage and throw it away than I do today.

It is commendable that a group is dedicated to the cleanup and the un-trashing of our capital.

It is certainly shameful that a massive clean up is necessary after litterbugs dispensed of 340,000 lbs of trash in one afternoon on a national stage.

Cheers to those dedicated to the cleanup.

Who is responsible for all of the cigarette butts that Obama flicks into the Rose Garden?
