Infant circumcision Yes/No

We were faced with a decision when we found out we were having a boy. We made as informed of a decision as we could make at that time. Not me, WE. My husband was also involved in this decision, which wasn't an easy one. Do you think we wanted our baby in pain? Do you realize that there is more information available now than 10 years ago about circumcision? I would share more information about his circumcision details but I have no desire to discuss this with anyone who wishes to demonize the parents instead of having an open dialogue.

I like when this sort of thoughtfullness is put into the decision. You made the best choice you could with the information you had at the time. I just get a little pissed at the number of parents and doctors who, with all the extra information we have nowadays, still want to have their sons circumcised without a second thought.

I don't think it's helpful for someone to blame his parents for choosing or allowing him to be circumcised - if they were operating with insufficient or erroneous information. By the same token it's not helpful to ridicule someone who's unhappy with that result, whether you feel the same or not.

So far this thread has remained for the most part a civil adult discussion of RIC, and no one is more pleasantly surprised than I. This is your second sarcastic post in this vein now, and it's exactly the sort of provocative knee-jerk rhetoric that typically drags this topic into the gutter. I'm surprised at you and frankly disappointed. If you don't have anything more thoughtful to contribute, may I respectfully suggest you abstain?

Well I dont know what kind of wacky hospitals you guys are thinking of but I didn't have to "fight" anything or put a spycam on the baby's crib. They asked if I wanted him circumsized and I said "No". It was pretty much that simple.

I've brought charges against them anyways, and I've fought long and hard for this. So, I'm not dropping them. Someone suggested that I actually ask for the death penalty. I'm not sure I can do that, but these "scars" do run long and deep. Damn, it hurts real bad!

Wow. All the "Be happy with what you have and let your son choose what is best for himself" talk and that is what gets through. I'd be truly appalled except for the fact that I know only one of you might possibly still take this point of view seriously.

So to SirConcis: Non-therapeutic neonatal circumcision is not recommended by any major medical organization on earth. It is classified as a cosmetic surgery. No matter how happy someone may be with the results, there is still removal of functional tissue from the penis which changes the mechanical, circulatory, and neurological makeup of the anatomy, and there is a surgical complication rate that is over 15x as high than is actually reported. Not everyone grows up to like their circumcised state, and many are distressed enough to restore a pseudo-foreskin (with a process that takes years to complete). No other such genital cutting is allowed in the United States, some other countries have banned it entirely in various circumstances, and people who continue to circumcise very often display glaring ignorance of the facts for the procedure they supposedly gave informed consent. And yet you continue reaching, feebly and desperately, for any contradictory information you can cling to justifying circumcision because, by golly, it worked for you! (So good in fact, you had it done twice. And those who choose to restore are accused of having Body Dysmorphic Disorder? )

You may think that's parody, but some guys feel just like that (but without the wild exaggeration. ~20,000 nerves is plenty, and of course they are not "blood-filled" - what were you thinking?) Some do get depressed and some (very few) do commit suicide.

Because there is no dotted line, there is no "correct" way to do a circumcision and no way of knowing whether you've taken too much - until the kid grows up and finds it doesn't work. There's a lot of natural variation in how well sex works for different guys. If a guy who's unlucky in his natural sexuality is also unlucky in his circumcision (over and above the bad luck to be circumcised at all), who know what he'll end up with(out)?
