As most of you know, the great master of cinema, Ingmar Bergman, died yesterday. I recently watched his film version of The Magic Flute, and thought it was wonderful. But I think my favorite films of his are Fanny & Alexander and Smiles of a Summer Night. What about you? Any other Bergman admirers out there?

Very much an admirer. I met him when I was a young man and spent several hours in conversation with him. He was brilliant, and extremely encouraging. I like his Magic Flute a lot, but I still like Seventh Seal the best.

Wow, that's very cool that you met Bergman, fortiesfun! I have friends who would die of jealousy after hearing that.

And I love Buñuel too, Devlin. Although I haven't seen all of his films, I'd say Viridiana is my favorite (so far)

And it turns out Michelangelo Antonioni died yesterday too. I hope TCM broadcasts retrospectives for both directors.

Bergman was very kind to me. Meeting him was my top experience as a student.

I looked up this thread to say that Antonioni had died also, only to find that you are ahead of me on that one. He, too, was a difficult but great director who deserves a little mourning.
