Apparently God was wrong when He told her to run for president.
Why "wrong"? Was Lucy Van Pelt "wrong" when she held the football and told Charlie Brown to run up and kick it?
Wonder if it "hurts" that she lost by such a wide margin in her state of birth?
Maybe she was defeated by the vengeful spirit of John Wayne Gacy.

I really don't understand how these batshit right-wing loons can be possibly taken seriously in your country.

While there is a problem with a strand of neo-nazi politics in Europe, most of them are lunatics in the sense of being sinister fanatics, rather than comical, almost childlike buffoons like Bachmann, Palin, O' Donnell et al - even Perry seems a little like that to my eyes. I suppose the possible exception is the leader of the neo-nazi BNP in the UK, but he largely attracts a single-issue (too many dark people in the country) and a general protest vote. I really can't think of any politician in Europe like any of the above being taken remotely seriously as a potential national leader.

Fox News is a perfect example of this strand of almost Lewis Carroll-esque absurdity. I spent an entire weekend watching youtube clips of the station, almost literally laughing out loud. One particularly hilarious clip involved a Norwegian guest being interviewed by a Newsreader about the Norwegian massacre (perpetrated by one of the sinister fanatics I mentioned earlier). He told the interviewer that Norway valued its democracy, to which the Newsreader indignantly replied "I don't think you can call a country where the policemen don't carry guns a democracy" !!!!!

If I didn't know better, I'd think it was a satire. A comedian called Chris Morris, here in the UK, used to do a controversial show called Brass Eye, which was a satire about a venal, right-wing News programme - I think it was broadcast before Fox News started. Little did we suspect that a station like that would ever really exist.

I can't recall anything like this before Dan Quayle. I'm not talking about ideology - Barry Goldwater was long before him of course, but he seemed closer to the sinister fanatics I referred to earlier. I have in mind more the buffoonish tendency of the names I've already mentioned along with the lurid, cartoonish nutcase pundits like Ann Coulter and nationally famous media personalities like Limbaugh and O'Reilly.

Where did this come from?

A great text titled, "Under God" by Gary Wills, explains how what would now be considered moderate or even liberal Republicans embraced Evangelicals and other fringe groups about 30 years ago - the contemporary party's base - to win elections, however, ended up legitimizing them and poisoning their fundamentals with extremism.

There had always been this battle of mainstream v. fringe in both parties. Democrats had to work with the Dixiecrats, Blue Dogs, Corporate/Wall Street whores (actually, this group is a big force in Dem politics), etc., but there is a sense, albeit a bit compromised, of them retaining some principles. The Republicans, however, have gone completely off. Which is why, Imo, Ron Paul's libertarianism has become such an attractive alternative.

Iirc, Eisenhower stated something about dragging the Republican party away from the extreme to progressivism back in the 50s. Now, apart from Fred Karger, Huntsman, somewhat, and RINOs, the moderate or liberal voice has been silenced in Republican politics, leaving room only for a very narrow and unpleasant interpretation of Republican standards to influence national politics and the greater society.
