Liberal Unitarian Universalist here.
I grew up in a conservative Christian family (however, my parents have since become moderates). I went to Baptist and Church of God growing up, but after some inklings of "this isn't right for me" in my early teens, I started finding out just how sexist and repressive the churches I grew up going to were - they advocated "traditional sex roles" and were on the side of all the people in my community who had been bullying me for being a tomboy and very nontraditional. I wasn't supposed to want a career or speak in church. Although I didn't have any desire to be a minister, I don't like it when churches exclude women from becoming one. And I not only wanted a career outside of the home, but all my career interests were in traditionally male fields.
After many years of not going to church at all and being generally anti-religion because of the issues I mentioned above, I finally took a chance on going to a Unitarian Universalist church because I'd heard that it was more liberal than other churches. I felt much, much more comfortable there. I don't go all that often, but I have no problems with the idea of going.
