Now all this media/social media coverage would not be complete without an Intercept essay from Glen Greenwald defending Edward Snowden, while trashing Western Media..enjoy..
Exploiting Emotions About Paris to Blame Snowden, Distract from Actual Culprits Who Empowered ISIS

But now we’ve entered the inevitable “U.S. Officials Say” stage of the “reporting” on the Paris attack — i.e., journalists mindlessly and uncritically repeat whatever U.S. officials whisper in their ear about what happened.
One key premise here seems to be that prior to the Snowden reporting, The Terrorists helpfully and stupidly used telephones and unencrypted emails to plot, so Western governments were able to track their plotting and disrupt at least large-scale attacks. That would come as a massive surprise to the victims of the attacks of 2002 in Bali, 2004 in Madrid, 2005 in London, 2008 in Mumbai, and April 2013 at the Boston Marathon. How did the multiple perpetrators of those well-coordinated attacks — all of which were carried out prior to Snowden’s June 2013 revelations — hide their communications from detection?
This is a glaring case where propagandists can’t keep their stories straight. The implicit premise of this accusation is that The Terrorists didn’t know to avoid telephones or how to use effective encryption until Snowden came along and told them. Yet we’ve been warned for years and years before Snowden that The Terrorists are so diabolical and sophisticated that they engage in all sorts of complex techniques to evade electronic surveillance.

In the wake of the Paris attacks, leaders around the world are looking at how they can better protect their citizens. One option is the increased use of so-called smart systems -- networks of sensors and cameras which monitor people and their activities.

Not sure what it has to do with Snowden, but yeah whatever.

If the Iranians had of actually thought, believed or suspected that the two boats were actually loaded with SEALS or conducting a recon mission, and had the drop on said US boat they would be at the bottom of big blue, instead of being a bargaining chip. There would be ten dead sailors instead of ten captives and the Revolutionary Guard would be on TV invoking the Blue Light/Desert One "we got em again" card.

Oddly enough a Soviet aircraft can violate Turkish airspace by 1 & a half miles multiple times and you're as quiet as a mouse pissing on cotton (less the whole pissing and moaning about why it got splashed by the Turks); however a US boat trying to recover another broke dick US boat drifts a mile into Iranian waters and it's time to pontificate the usual bullshit.

Sorry but I don't think the US and Iran will go at it over this one.

For the record if you're asking with regards to any figurehead of state (Obama, Putin, Reagan, Carter, Bush or even dickhead Kim Jung Un) receiving a Nobel Prize for Peace it is bullshit, regardless of who they are. That's like giving me a cookie for not screwing a hooker.

Mother Theresa, Ban Ki Moon, Boutros-Ghali maybe, but not the power brokers that have their little pinkie on the red button of death.

The U.S. will start tracking secret buyers of luxury real estate in Manhattan and Miami

Wednesday, January 13, 2016 11:04 AM EST
Concerned about illicit money flowing into luxury real estate, the Treasury Department said Wednesday that it would begin identifying and tracking secret buyers of high-end properties.
The initiative will start in two of the nation’s major destinations for global wealth: Manhattan and Miami-Dade County. It will shine a light on the darkest corner of the real estate market: all-cash purchases made by shell companies that often shield purchasers’ identities.

The UK Snoopers' Charter: A threat to press freedom? - The Listening Post (Feature)

Published on Jan 24, 2016
The British government is in the midst of re-writing the country's laws on surveillance and national security through a piece of legislation called the Investigatory Powers Bill (IPB) - and journalists have a big stake in this story.Over the last decade and a half, ever since the 9/11 attacks, the UK parliament has invoked more than 65 different laws and measures, to be used ostensibly to fight crime or terrorism. But the ramifications for British reporters have included stop-and-search requests while on the job, mining of their digital data, secret monitoring of their communications, and evidence that some reporters have somehow ended up on police databases used to track extremists. This is all now coming to a head as parliament debates the IPB - referred to by its critics as the 'Snoopers' Charter' - it's designed to pull together all laws governing how the government, police and intelligence services can spy on citizens, including those in the media. The Listening Post's Flo Phillips reports on surveillance measures in the UK and the relationship between the security state and the journalists who dare to challenge it.

Simple Digital Privacy in a Complex Digital Age

By Martin Matuszewski
Global Research, January 27, 2016

In an age where a Google search can reveal horrible or embarrassing content about anyone, the global Justice-Intelligence Complex stores everything it can on all individuals at all times, and private companies deploy secretive aggressive tracking technologies hiding public knowledge in the depths of discombobulating Terms of Service agreements, one can indeed feel less free and fearful, even if no one actually took away one’s freedoms.

The state of fear, caused by the more baleful possibilities this passive data storage enables and worsened by the inherent weakness in so many ‘secure’ technologies, can inhibit one’s ability to perform normal tasks involving online technologies. This, for some, is equally as crippling to freedom as physical bullies, ex-girlfriends and ex-boyfriends, or municipal bureaucrats are. Fortunately, there are a few actions one can take to reduce visibility in the digital realm in case that is a concern (which for me, it personally is a concern).

Doctors of Doom: What a PhD Really Means in the US National Security Community
By William M. Arkin and Alexa O’Brien

January 28, 2016 | 7:05 am
Kamal Abdullah was born in Sudan and raised in the Gulf States before immigrating to the United States in 1982. Ten years later, he became an American citizen.

He got an associate's degree in pre-engineering, and then finished his bachelor's in business administration at Kensington University. Abdullah freely admits that the distance-learning school — it offered dubious degrees by mail in the days before the internet as we know it existed and was eventually shut down by the government — took his money in exchange for what he wanted: a piece of paper that said he was a college graduate.

Abdullah (he asked that his real name not be used) subsequently worked as a factory laborer building 18-wheeler trailer units, then as a machine operator, and then as a manager at a variety of fast food restaurants in the Midwest. Even after 9/11 and as things turned seriously grim for the US in Iraq, Abdullah says he didn't feel strongly about American national security.

But then in 2007, a recruiter came calling. He told Abdullah that as a native Arab speaker, his country needed him. And so Abdullah became a contract linguist employed by a multinational corporation and contracted to support US military forces. He was polygraphed by counterintelligence authorities and his family background was investigated and vetted. Then he was granted a Top Secret clearance with access to sensitive compartmented information. For four years, 12 hours a day, six days a week, he listened in on Iraqi telecommunications on behalf of the 3rd Infantry Division in al Anbar province.

'Victory and Vindication': Julian Assange Slams UK Response to UN Ruling

February 5, 2016 | 11:30 pm
Julian Assange has insisted the UK and Sweden must respect the United Nations ruling that he has been unlawfully detained, formally announced on Friday.

"We have now a victory, and decided law on this case," he said via video link at a press conference following the publication of the ruling by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. The outcome of the ruling was a "vindication" that had brought a smile to his face, he said.

UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond had earlier described the ruling as "ridiculous," which Assange called "insulting." The ruling was legally binding, he said: "The time for appeal is over."

Britain and Sweden have rejected the panel's opinion that Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is a victim of arbitrary detention, with the UK government saying he will be arrested if he leaves the Ecuadorean embassy where he has been living for three and a half years.

just perfect, create the laws to suit themselves, and there kind, the higher rtole you have in life, the better chance you have of getting off ..lightly

cost the poms 10 million pound/good job
and the Sweedn rape case is neither here nor there/yet to be proven ..

Inside Story - Will Julian Assange walk free?

The British government has long argued that it is obliged to respond to an arrest warrant issued by a court in Sweden, where Julian Assange is wanted for questioning over a rape allegation.

For its part, the Swedish government has countered that a decision by a UN panel that Assange's freedom of movement should be restored has no formal impact on the investigation under Swedish law.

Assange is a computer hacker who enraged the United States by publishing online hundreds of thousands of secret US diplomatic cables on WikiLeaks, a website he founded.

A US grand jury investigation into WikiLeaks is ongoing.

Assange has been holed up in the Ecuador embassy in London since June 2012, to avoid extradition to Sweden.

The Department of Defense (DOD) released 198 photographs on Friday from Army and Navy criminal investigative files related to allegations of detainee abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan, the first time the US government has ever disclosed such images.

But the photographs, part of a cache of as many as 2,100 that DOD has withheld for more than a decade on national security grounds after the ACLU requested them, do not rise to the level of the disturbing images from Abu Ghraib prison that surfaced in 2004. The pictures released Friday show detainees, whose faces are partially redacted, with bruises and abrasions on their backs, feet, arms, and head. None depict US soldiers posing with detainees or physically assaulting them.

Workplace surveillance used to be an amateur business. Back in the early days of Microsoft,Bill Gates personally memorized his employees' license plates so he could keep track of who was arriving late or leaving early. A bit creepy, perhaps, but endearingly old school—the sort of pathetic scheme a crafty loafer like George Costanza would get around by leaving a car parked permanently at work so everyone would think he's still at his desk.

US Spy Chief Warns of Space Wars, North Korean Nukes, and 'Cyber Armageddon'
By Tess Owen

February 10, 2016 | 9:45 am
Director of National Intelligence James Clapper presented what he described as a "litany of doom" at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Tuesday, detailing the various national security threats currently faced by the United States.

"Unpredictable instability is the new normal," Clapper said. "It's a cliche but it's true — in my 50-plus years in the intelligence business, I cannot recall [facing] a more diverse array of challenges and crises than we do today."

One of the main topics during the hearing was North Korea, which launched a long-range rocket on Sunday carrying what it claimed was a satellite. The launch, which violated an international ban on North Korea developing ballistic missile technology, came just weeks after the country's fourth test of a nuclear bomb.

China's space telescope to displace 10,000 humans in search for aliens

Residents will receive 12,000 yuan ($2,575) in subsidies for their troubles, with some getting extra support for housing.

FAST, built at a cost of 1.2 billion yuan, will dwarf the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico as the world's largest radio telescope, which is some 300 metres in diameter.

Wu Xiangping, director-general of the Chinese Astronomical Society, said the telescope's high level of sensitivity "will help us to search for intelligent life outside of the galaxy".
