I need another gay man's perspective on something. Many years ago, in my late teens (18 years old +) I had a buddy. We did many things together. Often, we drank beer and worked on cars in his garage till very late at night. Drinking age was 18 back then. We talked about everything but never about sex. Neither of us had a girlfriend. We both came from religious families and sexual freedoms were not what they are today. He would often wear cutoff jeans commando style. When sitting down, his cock would often peak out from his pants. He had to know he was hanging out. While I enjoyed the view, I never said a word. After a few beers and in almost total darkness, I would walk behind his garage to piss. While I was in the middle of pissing, he would walk up close to me, whip his dick out and start pissing next to me. In hindsight, I should have put his hand on my cock or grabbed his. I didn't because I didn't want to lose a good friend or worse, be outed to all my friends.

My questions are these; Is he gay? Did I totally miss an great opportunity?

I talk to him by phone once in a rare while but we have all but lost touch--

Well, if after all these years you still don't know, chances are it would have been a mistake to have done anything.

Are you out now? Does he know?

At this point how would it impact your life to know today if he would have been interested in playing or not?

It could be important to know what was actually going on or just one of those little curiosities like we all find ourselves trying to understand.

Thanks for your reply! I've been thinking about him and the stuff we did together. I'm going to look him up and chat-

I had a very similar friendship while growing up. We lived in the same neighborhood, were interested in the same TV shows, hobbies and academic areas. We spent time together on almost a daily basis.

I had a lot of technical skills he didn’t and he had a lot of intellectual skills that I didn’t. We spent most of our high school years in the same gym class, regularly dressed and showered together, swam in my parent’s pool and took bicycle trips together. We shared the same religion and religious family life. He definitely had the body to catch my eye.

He did not date and avoided most forms of hetronormative social activities, as did I.
There was a very high probability that he was gay. I knew what interested me but during that time in history and in our lives it was possible to be socially and sexually isolated. We didn’t know what it meant or would mean to be gay.

We shared a number of male friends, none that appeared to be gay. Back then we didn’t know how to act in another way with each other than to act straight.

After high school, our lives took us in different directions. He died several years ago and so far as I know, he never had a straight or gay experience. I loved him like a brother and I am happy our relationship did not add a sexual chapter. It would have been very complicated back then.

Thank You for that Levi! You nailed it down and I'm sorry to hear he passed away.

I was the technical, he was the intellectual. We also showered together and clothed or naked, he was cute as could be. We swam in another friend's pool and they also didn't appear to be gay. I don't recall anyone appearing or 'coming out' gay at that time.

I can't believe the parallels here.
