The "corner shop" found in most British towns is now better known as the "Paki shop".

I'm not sure if most Pakistanis in the UK find the term "paki" an insult but I'm certain that Indians do not appreciate it. Historical tensions and hatred between neighbouring Pakistan and India make it very insulting to the Indians to be grouped with their enemies by ignorant Europeans.

Countryguy or anyone, whats a redneck?

Redneck to me is pure country. Farming, horses, cattle , livestock, rodeo, boots, pickups, old time values and integrity, old fashioned, frugal (my Grandma and Grandpa were Rednecks to the bone, lol) It's a way of life...a mindset.

**and let's not forget a real purty garden, complete with an old broken toilet and bald pickup tires for ambiance, and an old stripped bedspring for the berry vine to grow up on**:biggrin1:

Originally coined to refer to the farmers, who after a days work in the sun, would come home with the backs of their necks sunburnt and red.

Used by some to refer to people they considered stupid, low life trash

As I understand it, "Pakistan" translates as Paki = pure + stan = land; therefore, "Land of the Pure". A word they came up with upon partition in 1947. So "Paki" = pure. How is this racist? I don't mind being called a Canuck, if it's not meant as a putdown; I think (and hope) Brits, Yanks, Aussies and Kiwis feel the same.

yes, i'm sure that when skinheads are yelling it, spraying it on a door and putting bricks through a window, the people inside are thinking,
''cool! he wrote pure on our door!!''
instead of it making them cringe.

all words are just words. it's the attitude and intention they are linked to within that culture which make the difference.

It's not racist!
It's only racist if you don't like it!

After all, THEY are the foreigners!
(I am QUITE certain they have names for YOU.)

Fair Trade at work! (Linguistics. NOT Linguini.)
Old as the world, won't change because people get runny noses over it.

Bleh. People are thin-skinned now, they will cry and rub their vagina's together over damn near anything. Here's some Vagisil, and Prep-H for that "P.C." butthurt people come up with over nothing.

Thanks Oprah!

See?
That ain't racist.
That is just me being an "asshole".
And if you agree with that....
YOU are a Racist!
(Ha! Sarcasm, Irony AND Circular Logic...can't beat a triple whammy like that!)

Truth:
If you ain't me, I got a word for you.
If I ain't you, I got a word for you.
Together, we string letters into words into sentences, like a bastardized ballet of vulgarity and obscenity more beautiful than either could ever be alone.

I got my word for you.
You don't like it.
I don't care.

You got a word for me.
I don't like it.
You don't care.

And the world keeps turning anyway. Imagine that!

Dolfette-I ask a legitimate question and get a snotty, sarcastic answer. As usual. Thanks a bunch. Real helpful.

Kingdongilingus - WTF? What are you smoking, snorting or injecting? Send some of it north please.

It's one of those words that some people see as racist but others don't. As other posters have said, it depends on the sentiment behind it. Some people use it with pride.

I remember reading a story in the paper a few years ago about this guy of Pakistani origin who wanted to get a private plate, with PAK1 on it, but the DVLA refused to release it because it was racist.

I'd still be hesitant to say it... I'd just call the guy Harry... Even though he's okay with being called "Paki Harry" I still wouldn't do it just because to me (and the way I was raised) it seems almost disrespectful

My cousin was married to a great Pakistani guy called Tony for years. Sadly they are now divorced. He delighted in getting all his mates to call him Tony the paki. It took me a long time to be comfortable with it but I did eventually as to him is seemed a term of endearment strangely enough.

The same guy would go mental though if his kids were called paki at school or whilst out playing.

This to me is the perfect example of the sentiment behind the word and why IMHO it is wrong for a word to be automatically thought of as racist. It's a case of not seeing the wood for the trees.

Not necessarily. Like you yourself have said, the intent of the word is what makes it racist. It's not PC to say "the Paki shop" or "eating a chinky tonight", but not everybody that has used those terms is a racist.
ok, i'll reprase.

only 'better known as'' to cretins.

better?
