that local shopkeeper is a coconut (brown on the outside, white on the inside) pussy, self loathing conformist SOB. his desire to conform to the social norms of the community around him are to ease himself integration into the community. however in doing so he is seen as and probably referred to as "that paki" or "the paki corner shop". thus resulting in his dismissal from his original and ethnic community and the point of ridicule for his new friends, he has then lost any desires to resist against the social norms enforced on him at the time, and without the desire for resistance or agency he humiliates himself as punishment purposefully putting himself a the but of the jokes in his community.

thats just a light POSSIBLE social explanation for his behaviour.

sorry people like that annoy me.

the word is offensive, end of.
Heaven forbid an immigrant works hard and GETS A JOB IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY! Better to just act like a foreigner (even if a 3rd or 4th gen native) and complain bitterly about the hostility?

words aren't a cause of suicide. circumstances can cause suicide, but words on their own? no.

i'm not going to talk anymore about suicide. its going off topic.

Hardly. It's talking about all possible outcomes of verbal abuse. Sorry you can't deal with it. Verbal abuse can cause suicide. Listen to me, a survivor of both abuse and suicide.

What kind of dick are you?

utter nonsense.
the word does offend most pakistanis, because it has been used as a slur for so long.
and you really believe the ignorant bastards can tell the difference between indian, bangladeshi and pakistani? really??

dolfette we are both on the same page, although you seem to think otherwise. I know their intent is to offend by the use of the term whether or not they know their target's country of origin.

 Pardon my ignorance, but is the word "Paki" a racist comment?.

After the falling out at Strictly come dancing when the word was used, i kinda came to thinking -

A shop in my neighborhood is known as Paki Harry's, it is known because the owner is from Pakistan and he has those words painted on his shop signage, he also introduces himself as Paki Harry.

Listening to the politics show today about the Lisbon treaty etc, Polish people were refered to as Poles, British people were brits and the people from Checoslovaquia were refered to as Checs.

Why is the word Paki refered to as a racist comment?, would'nt Poles also be the same and the word Brits?.

What do you think?

Of course it is a racist word, I am very surprised you dont know that Tardis. You live in the UK after all.

Points i was making Niceguy.

I think it really depends on who is saying it, how they are saying it, and who they are saying it to!

I have a black friend who actually plays up the whole gangster rap kind of thing with us lot as a running joke, and greets us all with "Big up my nigger" and continually evolving silly handshake! We're all white. It does get some very uncomfortable looks from people in the pub! If he's not offended, and we're not offended, what business is it of anyone else? They shouldn't be earwigging!

At the end of the day it is just a word, a collection of letters. If it's not said with any venom, any insult you detect in it reflects more on your thought process than that of the person who said it.

You cannot use a word and have to explain it everytime. If a third party finds it objectionable then instead of attaching meaningless racist labels to the word or the innocent person using it they should examine their own vocabulary very carefully. Recently a friend uttered this to me during a convo about ethnic fighting skills: "Us Pakis are a martial race." I didn't object to the Paki but took exception to his blanket statement that the tribes and castes of Pakistan are martial.

I think it is. The only reason I wouldn't sack Anton du Beke is because it would be sacking his dance partner as well, to whom the insult was made.
