Look everyone, The Walt Disney Company has been getting my nerves this entire decade. Those greedy fuckers not only dominated the box office recently, but they finalized their acquisition 20th Century Fox, not Fox Broadcasting Company, on my birthday. That’s not the biggest reason for my grudge, though; I prefer not to talk about the true reason unless someone references it.

But wait, am I being stupid expressing how annoyed I’m getting? This is the movie and television studio that is known for their extremely recognizable characters and reputation for attempting to stay “fun for the whole family” as the saying goes. Isn’t my favorite video game company, Nintendo, similar in that regard?

“E” Ticket Memories: Five Favorite Facts About Ticket Books - D23

When I was in elementary school in the late seventies and early eighties in Orange County California, my friends and I used to beg our parents to drive us up Harbor Blvd. to Disneyland. At the entrance my mother would purchase a ticket book filled with tear-out coupons lettered A through E for rides of escalating thrill. An A ticket would earn a park goer attendance on some wimpy ride no school boy in his right mind would be seen on, while the coveted E tickets would earn someone a ride aboard a thrill-packed coaster like Space Mountain or the Matterhorn bobsleds. Although a decade had passed since the Disney team of Roy and Wally had departed, the park still was run with old-fashioned Midwest family values envisioned by Walt. Corporate greed took a backseat to good value for one's entertainment dollar.

Soon after Michael Eisner took the helm a perceptible change took place. Scarcely could a family enter through the gates of Disneyland or Disney World without being impaled by souvenir stands overflowing with horrendously overpriced junk the kids just had to have. The quaint coupon books were superseded by annual passes that escalated in price at hundreds of percent greater than the yearly inflation rate. Walt Disney's vision of theme park value was now being run by evil Wall Street sorcerers who's only goal was to extract the last pound of flesh from park visitors.

As one of those of getting precariously close to the half-century mark, I can skip Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge if the going price is equivalent to buying a new sports car.

They wield so much influence because their films are printing money.

Their films are printing money because speaking broadly, they are very entertaining to a large audience.

Am I supposed to begrudge them taking on the risk of a multi-movie franchise in the Avengers? Or going for an R rated comic movie w/ Deadpool? Or subverting the true love's kiss trope w/ Frozen?

The new star wars films aren't as good as the original trilogy, but they're still better than the prequels.

As much as I like some of their classic stuff (especially their old, non-cgi animation), they are an extremely unsavory company, down deep (like every corporation). I think you'll find that, as is often the case, the more a company cultivates a "family-friendly, wholesome" veneer, the dirtier and more pernicious their true character is, especially the suits at the top.

The ones that scare me the most (in terms of either all out greed, acquisition, or sinister political agendas) though are: Activision, EA, Time Warner, Vivendi Universal, Google, Twitter, and Facebook.

And that's just the entertainment/media companies....

Deadpool was made by Fox before the Disney acquisition. The Avengers was made by Marvel who is owned by Disney, but the groundwork for the Marvel movies had been laid well before Disney bought Marvel.

Hate is a bit strong.

I loved Disney's fantasy world as a child but grew out of it. Never got into comic books so superhero movies are out, too. Lucas, Spielberg and Roddenberry remain my biggest draw in the sci-fi genre as well as favorite directors like Peter Weir, Robert Redford, Woody Allen and handful of others. Loved early Pixar but not sure I like what's happened since Disney bought them.

In my previous post I only addressed the Disney parks. However I vividly recall two years ago when Star Wars: The Last Jedi came-out there was a howl of protest from what the media called fanboys. I recall these overwhelmingly male Star Wars fans were ignored when KABC sent their movie critic George Pennachio out on Hollywood Blvd. to interview theater goers who had just come-out from a screening. They were all jubilant and effusive in their reviews-- and they were all women. Pennachio smiled his approval before blurting out that "Disney is the parent company of ABC."

I can't get too worked-up over a movie. Many of these agitated fanboys seem to long for the days of stronger male role models, like back in 1967 with Ricardo Montalban as Khan in Star Trek. Yep, those were the days when "such men dare take what they want." Kahn oozed masculinity along with his sauve, aristocratic Castilian-English accent, enough to send the Enterprise's Lt. McGivers panties drenching and longing for his space seed.

Fanboys are still complaining about The Last Jedi and Star Wars in general. There are YouTube channels that seem to only post videos complaining about Star Wars. It is almost impressive because these people are making multiple videos a week talking about Disney Star Wars. I would run out of stuff to say after one video, but they can just keep on going on and on talking about SJWs and blah blah blah.

Hate Disney all you want. It’s fine. I am a Disney lover. That’s fine, too.

We all gotta be who we are.
And, now...for a happy moment!

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah
Zip-A-Dee-A
My oh my, what a wonderful day
Plenty of sunshine heading my way
Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah
Zip-A-Dee-A!
I refuse to watch Frozen. That stupid song.. just.... NO.
I must be among the few who have never seen it. Let it go!

It's apparently a cottage industry to create YouTube videos lambasting something. Who knew?

Of course, if you can actually create something compelling and hilarious with all that vitriol, why not go into stand up comedy or write books?

Regarding Star Wars....or for that matter, George Lucas (who isn't even associated anymore with the series since he sold it to Disney): people got outraged when he did those prequels but if you think about it, it's possible he was a just a mediocre, talentless writer/director who managed to catch lightning in a bottle a few times (with the first three SW films, Willow, and the first three Indiana Jones films) and then never again.

Same thing with James Cameron; made magic with The Terminator, T2, and Aliens, but everything else: a turd hoagie.
