In some cases is Religion just an excuse for people to be Hateful bigots?

"I don't mind gay people, but the bible blah blah blah"

It is so disgusting.

Fucking Prop 8....
As I posted in another thread, hiding behind, "The Bible says...", is the most pathetic of excuses.

depends

there's religion, and there's religion

what you are calling religionists are using an ideology of religion to exact social control

just as liberals or conservatives use their respective ideologies

The bible says... is such a shit argument, the bible also says to stone people and that slaves should obey their masters - people forget what they want to but recall the most inane of things.

If these people who disagree with gay marriage actually read the bible they would see its message is not as clear as the fear-mongers would have them believe.

Well, as I wrote in the other thread:
...Ask any biblical scholar for the TRUTH, and they'll admit, that there is no more mistranslated, contradictory, or arbitrary text, than the Bible. When people spout off a verse "proving" their point, I laugh, especially, when it's in English. The Bible is a collection of books that was, again, arbitrarily codified, hundreds and hundreds of years after Christ's death, and it wasn't done by G-d. As holy as they may have been, the canon that we now refer to as the Bible, was done by a council of bishops, mere mortal men. We're still discovering books that were left out, and also ones now included, that were previously in line to be rejected. And the translations... Eesh, don't get me started on that. My point is that, while people hide behind, "Well, the BIBLE says...", there's no merit to the Church, or its followers, stating any flavour of "God hates fags", based on the inconsistent document that we call "the Bible". Don't get me wrong, I'm not the heathen that the above probably paints me to be. I actually stay at a monastery a couple times a year, and have family members in the clergy. But I go into it with a healthy and logical examination, and still come out with the basic tenets of my faith, and don't hide behind the illogical rhetoric that some closed-minded fear-mongers have thrown at me, no matter how bright they're supposed to be.
P.S. The "Sin of Sodom", actually "[to'ebhah = offensive] before me (G-d)", is also used in the Bible referring to a man-with-woman act, as well, and has no inherent homosexual connotation. Again, that's based on a later mistranslation, that served a purpose at the time, and has stuck...

I don't think that Christian men should be fucking their wives in the butt if they are so concerned with stamping out sodomy.

...or engaging in pre-marital sex, adultery, swinging, ("according to the Bible") having sex around menstruation, or divorcing and remarrying, for that matter.

depressing...I wonder how many of the people that voted for prop 8 have been divorced? how many of them cheat on their spouses? How many of them come from broken homes? Even better, how many of them are online on the gay hook up sites posting, "My wife/girlfriend is out of town or at work and I'm looking for a lil guy time." It makes no sense to me how anyone can deny someone a right when it is Constitutionally wrong. If they want to protect the sanctity of marriage...they should outlaw divorce.

All you have to do is go on craigslist and see all the listings of "straight" guys looking for men (and usually they seem to be wearing their wife or girlfriend's panties)

I'm glad that DJG used the word, "religion," and not "Christianity."

The Bible doesn't condemn homosexuality. The only plausible reference to homosexuality is in Leviticus 18:22 and is translated: "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination."

"Abomination" is used often in the King James Bible. For example, it's an abomination to eat shrimp or oyster's. "Laying with mankind as with womankind" is extremely vague; it doesn't mention sex in particular.

My point is that many sects of Christianity condemn homosexuality, but the Bible does not.

QFT!

Isn't it possible jesus was gay?
What's up with the 12 apostles?
And weren't they all pissed off about Mary Magdalene?
Just a thought.
Blasphemer! :yuck:

:yikes: Wait a second, the government has no business in my bedroom or anyone elses. :12:Translation: I am not giving up my anal sex for nobody.

Eh, those are mostly ploys. Kinda like the myriad of hot bisexual endowed women on LPSG with 3 posts and gone, replete with a gallery of a bevy of stolen pics off the net.

SF Craiglist is a very amusing place... I didn't even bother with Rants/Raves... I'm sure there's a slew of bottom-of-society posts on Prop 8, Obama, etc... will be good when things calm down, and the resumption of Friday Flashes, space traveler posts, and the like ensues.
