Old Bostonese (this is how
I was raised to speak...
exactly) My parents and much of my extended family still speak precisely in this "manna
h"
That New Bostonese brings back memories. I used to live in "Meffah".
These are not actually Yankee accents since they are very local to Eastern Mass. Maine and New Hampshire would sound related to this but different. Certainly the "conservation of R's" rule still stands, where Rs are removed from where they should be and placed where they shouldn't be.
E.g. The phrase "Donna parks the car", in New Bostonese would be "Dawner pahks the cah".
Then there is that wierd pronunciation of the "ur" sound in "insurance", or "firm". I could never figure out how to imitate that one.
I grew up on the coast of CT, closer to RI than NYC. My family sounds like they are from Long Island via Providence. No lockjaw for me. More like Joe Pesci eating a Grinder.
Having lived all over, my accent has been flattened.
