I think it is. I have a friend who is lesbian through and through and she calls other gay women, and men faggots. I personally have never been on that side of her angst. I have been call a faggotty nigger by other people and so on and so on. I just move on and wish them well.

Depends.

More offensive if a straight person says it to a gay guy. But it's still subject to context.

Personally, I don't get it; in using any of the above, surely it's still insulting - if not worse - no matter who you are or what your relationship with the other party may be.

Perhaps I'm a bit old fashioned, but I wouldn't use any of those terms to anybody and I'd be somewhat suspicious of anyone who did.

I've heard people explain their use of such words with phrases like "reclaiming the '*******' word", implying that by so doing they in some way neutralise the hurt it causes, but I've never really been convinced by that argument.

However, I have to say I am neither black, gay or female - so I might be completely mistaken.

No. words by themselves are not offensive, but the context can be. If the word is used between friends, I doubt either are offended by the use of the word. Of course, you have to be a member of the club to be able to use the word. As a white guy, I'm smart enough to know that I can't use the N word, even among my Black friends who use it informally.

Hmm. These kinds of words are used to imply someone belongs to an inferior group. It isnt really what the thing is, colour, sexuality or something else. The hurt is meant to be that it is a bad thing to be part of that group. So if you dont think it is a bad thing, then there is no insult. If the insult is coming from someone who themselves self-evidently also belongs to that group, then it is even less of an insult and may indeed become a joke where the two agree they do belong, and maybe its better to belong to the group than not. The problem is not necessarily the word or its real applicability but that it is intended as an insult, and both parties know it is. Or know it isnt.

The word is pejorative and therefore context bears no influence on its meaning. Those who use have chosen to convey an idea of disparagement to the listener, either in earnest or in jest. I, personally find the term offensive and do not use it.

honestly it goes both ways, offensive is in the ear of the beholder, or the belistener? what the hell would the word be

it's an individual thing, to me I think it's rude and I really don't even have any gay friends that I can recall anymore
but it bothers me for people to say it, sort of liek calling people retarded

I personally don't like that word and I don't like when people use it. Even if it's a joke. It just sounds so derogatory to me.
