The reproductive fitness advantage of the glans is likely completely null in most non-poly-amorous societies at this point. In terms of size there's probably a negative advantage in that the genetic and social conditions which would produce abnormally small penises are weeded out over time.
As such, the majority of penis selection throughout the world was probably not done on the basis of size, but rather on the basis of lack of size. Length probably is selected for more in those wherein females had larger behinds (either due to their own genetic predispositions, or due to social conditions, such as the desirability of larger women) because larger female posteriors create an increasing length requirement in order to successfully copulate.
This makes substantial sense when looking at regions historically; European nations which were heavily influenced by the renaissance ideal woman typically have larger penis sizes. Those cultures which typically had slender women (especially those which have had little outside interference, such as japan and korea) tend to display smaller average lengths.
This, however, is only part of the picture, because beyond one's genetic size predisposition, many people who do not grow optimally will not actually reach said size. Areas which had increased instances of incomplete growth would again have a larger selection bias against a makeup which would produce smaller penises.
That said, it doesn't seem that marker genes which can be mapped in order to confirm the various theories have been discovered, so everything in this thread will probably remain at some level of enlightened theory because of the lack of evidence.

Of course, you can argue that "larger than average" penis sizes are a recent evolutionary step for mankind, however, I would argue that it's just the spread of wealth, technology, and other things that have enticed those "big guys" hiding out there to come out and enjoy the freedom.

It's definitely a new thing. There is a documentary called The Anatomy of Sex. It explains that when humans began to stand upright, they began having sex facing each other. Because of the position of the vagina only longer penises could penetrate deep enough to have a good chance at reproduction. Through natural selection the smaller penises kept getting weeded out until pretty much all remaining genes were those of larger penises being passed down. They have continued to get larger until now and I'm sure they will continue in the future.

This is ridiculous. Penis size doesn't correlate at all with survival or anything of that matter. Look at alligators; in the past few years their penis size has actually decreased. Most, if not all animals, have indicators other than organ size, that shows a good mate. And it's like that with humans. Women might want to have fun with a big cock, but usually if the woman is responsible and the hung stud isn't, she'll hopefully see that and settle on a much more mature, settled man. If you know anything about genetics you know that most genetic changes actually are bad. A gene gets damaged by cosmic radiation and the kid is born with hypospadias. It also serves to reason that penis size above a certain point proves to be bad. Who would want a foot long dick? if you have to stand up and do with only 6 or 7 inches inserted is it an advantage? There are also some indications that guys with a large glans are more likely to impregnate than those longer or simply with a small diameter because a large head plugs the area in front of the uterus after ejaculation longer and allows thee sperm a platform to end up in the the uterus. So size is relative to what you need in terms of reproduction. Those long skinny tools can do the job but the large pistons are more likely to drive the sperms home.
