I have a family member who is addicted. The stress is horrible -- he has to do online college because he can't sit in a classroom. He can't take a non-stop flight and has a hard time sitting in movie theaters or staying in social situations -- has to keep going outside to have a smoke. (We're in California where you can't smoke in public places, and most people have non-smoking households.)

He has tried many times to quit and right now is investigating hypnosis because he knows some people who used that to successfully kick the habit.

Tobacco, apparently, is four times as addictive as herion, and I believe it.

i started right before my 18th birthday. only recently trying to quit. right now i only smoke when i go to the bar with the boys but my god is it hard. ive been trying to find another vice and so far coffee isnt really cutting it,

i started mainly cause i wanted to try it. some of my friends did but it wanst galmorous or anything to me. i started cause i was curious. and then i went from marlboro lights to lucky strikes non filter in about a year.

im quitting cause i wanna get back in shape but its hard.

people start smoking for all different reasons. so you non smokers out there really should not condemn smokers. you dont always know the full story.

I hate smoke. A lot of people in my family smoke. Its disgusting. I have to ask them to not smoke when I'm eating, or just go out of the room.

I thought smokers smoked because they were: anxious/stressed/nervous/etc?

Or to rebel against their parents. Peer pressure is a big cause. I never felt pressured or at least I never gave into it. I think its disgusting that people do that to their bodies...I was actually thinking this on waking. Why would you purposely blacken your lungs? I just fail to understand it. It stinks, causes various diseases and makes your mouth taste like an ashtray...what can possibly be good about it?

Maybe people only keep smoking because of the addiction?

I don't condemn them, I just feel sorry for them.

I find cigs dirty. The smell, the smoke, the dirty ashtrays.

Heavy smokers'breath smells. My Algebra teachers breath smelled like sardines from smoking.

Some people must have a phone booth in their house and smoke in it because thier clothing reeks of stale smoke

I don' even like to touch a pack of cigs. I have bought some as an errand for co-workers.

I also think it's wrong that they are $6 or $7 a pack.(because of the tax) But hopefully that will disuade some poeple.

i just quit 4 weeks ago after 16 years of smoking and i can feel the benefit already, i have to agree that quitting is a mindset and if anyone is struggling i recommend you to read this book it makes you see your addiction and smoking for what it really is
Amazon.com: The Easy Way to Stop Smoking: Join the Millions Who Have Become Nonsmokers Using the Easyway Method: Books: Allen Carr

i wouldnt say im finding it easy but its not been anywhere near as bad as i thought and i know i,ll never do it again, my mind is definately made up i just dont want it to be part of my life anymore.

Although I thought smoking was idiotic, I started smoking at 19 to impress some girls. Who's the idiot now? Isn't it ironic?

Thankfully after several years I quit and have been smoke free for several years.

I saw the link here is what caught my eye.

"Peer pressure plays an important part. Many children start smoking because their friends have tried it or smoke themselves."

They think it's cool, and their friends tell them that they can be cool too if they smoke.

thank God that you have to be over 18 to buy cigs, at leat it may discourage some kids.

I don't know who you talk to, or how often you come across the youth, but that's bullshit. Yes, alot of kids take up smoking because their freinds do it, but they don't think their cool for doing it. I haven't met one person who thinks their superior/better/cooler for smoking, infact it's usually the opposite.

I started smoking because my friends were doing it, it was just a thing to do, I didn't feel any cooler for doing it, nor did my friends. Now, it's just a habit.

ITs all in your head.i smoked for 17 years and quit cold turkey.you dont need patches, gum or the other bs.its all in your mind.

This is SO true. Smoking is a habit. It is not harder to kick cigarettes than Heroin, it is about wanting to and not giving in to temptation. Changing the situations that went with cigarettes, after a coffee, break time at work, not handling irritating situations... they are all solvable without breathing in 400+ chemicals, most added by BAT or whoever to keep smokers in line!

I smoked for more years than I didn't, I liked rough french cigarettes, Gauloises.40 a day. Untipped. I smoked over an ounce of hash a week and HAD to have it. HAD to. Just to keep me; "Me"

I stopped. Not patches no gum, no therapy no weight gain, no bad mood. No relapses.

I have saved several thousand pounds since giving up, and can taste, and smell now. I didn't realise how much smoking stopped that. I didn't realise what percentage of my wages dissappeared in smoke every month, I wasn't aware how I smelled to others. I didn't know that blood wasn't travelling throughout my body as it should have done... I thought I knew best...I was in charge of my life and knew I'd give up when the time was right, eventually, maybe next week, after my birthday, in the New Year, This time next month... I wasn't in control at all. A packet of cigarettes were the control. Not even a full packet...just the next cigarette, the next the one after that.

When I feel I need a cigarette ( I still do sometimes) I do something about it. I DO NOT have a cigarette, and that is what I do.

If you need to, punch a wall, read a chapter, chant, pray, chat, have a wank...whatever gets you through; there has to be a better solution to a problem than killing yourself a little...

...and no, no-one's relying on the tax from your cigarettes (this govenment's probably wasting that money in Basra or Kabul!) But when you need them, the hospital will be there to treat one of the many various forms of cancer the 400+ chemicals you are happy to inhale cause.
