I gave me rent check to my new super (about 4 months) today and he said "thank's babe" and it's not the first time he has said it. Is it wierd for a guy to call another guy babe?

Yes, it is. Unless you were wearing a skirt and looked quite fetching. :biggrin1:

Yeah, Id say thats weird. I'd feel a little thrown off if my super started calling me babe (if they were a "he," of course)

haha, even so... any landlord hitting on their tenant is weird. It almost seems cliche when it happens, haha.

It depends on what part of the country you are from. Here in Texas, it is not unusual. It's a term of endearment towards a friend, someone you like, and sometimes a family member. It is used by both genders towards both genders. I've even been called babe by the sheriff.

I had a mate once that used to call me babe and it never bothered me at all, but then he was HOT and i used to melt a little very time he did, lol.

Perhaps its as inocent as 'cheers m'dear' or even as the Cornish say, 'my lover' after everything.

'Loaf of bread is it today, that'll be 60p my lover.'

Last time a guy called me "baby" I called him "sugerlips" back. I'd say it was a bit weird, the person who called me baby was a mate of mine and I think it was a slip of the tongue.

He might have been trying to see how you would react. If he starts showing up where you live for no reason, you might get offered ways of reducing your rent. I had a land lady like that once.

It's a little unusual but I don't think it's all that weird, some people say stuff like that as a reflex.

I have heard it used as a slang term in movies based in like the 60's. I have seen guys watching football games and when someone from the team they like is running the ball up the field they will shout "Go baby go!" I don't think of it the same way as somebody calling their SO baby.

Agree completely; and I'm in Arkansas moving back to Texas. "Babe" and "Baby" are just used indiscriminately here. Means nothing.

What I think is WEIRD is to refer to a mixed group of males and females (or even worse, a group of all females) as, "You guys!". Guys are guys. Females are not "guys".

The OP is from New Jersey, as am I originally. While there are some regional differences in intonation and pitch men do not call each other babe or baby in the Garden state.

That's because you call people y'all, I think it is normal for a group of male and female to call them guys. Even a group of female I would say are you guys coming over later. If I was born 100 years ago I would call them gals.

I think you are right, just like people call everyone "boss" or "cheif". It just sound very strange to hear a man call another man babe when you are not used to it.

At a time once I worked with a man who called me Babe It was rough because I found him attractive and knew he meant it in a friendly way with no sexual thought attached Bottom line is it is just a way of being friendly do not take it more seriously.

Yeah, I think that he's either from somewhere where they always use that term, or he's trying to "fish" you...and see what you'll respond to. I have a friend who calls me "baby" all the time and I hate it; but I let him do it anyway because he won't stop.
