What am I doing too much? I only do about 30 minutes, 3 times a week. Except for this last week, when I only went once.

I will try to go tomorrow. I feel shitty today. I didn't sleep good last night and have had a headache and nausea all day. I'm going to bed at 9:30.

That four different excuse's

The thing is to work out smart. Lex is on the right track.

Try to work in compound big muscles movements. Squats, bent over rows, bench press, dead lifts. Watch out for working too hard. You might raise your cortisol levels and actually cause a net loss in muscle mass. Each of the movements i mentioned above cause your body to release a large amount of muscle building testosterone.

I am an old geezer but my last bloodwork had me as 175 total cholesterol, insanely high good lipids and low bad lipids. BP 105/75. Total testosterone at 700.

There are lots of excellent sites to gather info about proper training. There are now some designer pro hormones that can rocket your strength and muscle growth to levels that are incredible and you can have a body that will be absolutely head snappingly impressive.

Most people don't work out because they are lazy. The are tremendous benefits. I personaly do it base purely on ego. I'm a world class powerlifter benn lifting since I was 8. I love the feeling being powerful. I can't lift at all if I don't go heavy. If the bar isn't bendin then you're just pretend'in!

The downside is that it is catching up with me. I've got 3 herniated discs in my back a torn tendon in my forearm and worst of all for a bencher: I need my shoulder replaced. All at the tender age of 36. That's not even including the arthritis in my hips kness shoulders and ankles. I'm what you call a workoutaholic!

like they say too much of a good thing isn't a good thing.

Oh, I wasn't sure if it was lifting weights or cardio. Some people lift weights and do too much, their body gets sore and worn down after a few weeks, then they don't look forward to going to the gym. I thought that may be you. Maybe you are not seeing any results, so you are getting bored. What do you do for those 30 minutes?

It's weights. I had an elliptical at home and got rid of it, and got another treadmill. I keep changing my home equipment. I've bought all kinds of devices, used them, got sick of them, they collect dust, then I sell them. Rowing machines, etc....
I do a workout on the machines, not free weights. All those different machines and you sit down and put the stick in the hole (that sounds dirty :biggrin1:) for the desired weight. I do the bench press, butterfly (I think you call it), biceps, triceps, abdominals, lower back, etc. Each machine has a picture, how to use it, and what body part you're exercising. I do 30 reps on each machine, except for the ab machine. I do more on that one.

That four different excuse's

I could probably think of 4 more.

I guess I'm just trying to figure out exactly what staying on good shape gets you.

Wow, Jovial, I'd say judging from your pics, the benefits are self evident. Very impressive!

I used to go to the gym a lot for about three years. My enthusiasm for it ranged, till eventually I downright hated it. Back problems didn't help.

These days I use a home gym and am getting good results. All I have is a bench, a range of dumbbells and a dips/chinning station. Put this setup together for under $400.

I also have my bike set up in one of those stationary contraptions.

So it's there for me when I'm in the mood, and even if the mood is fleeting, I can still get in a 20 minute workout.

The only downside is I don't get to do any people watching.

I don't work out, I don't like exercise, but I do walk a fair bit.

Walking IS exercise. I know many people who maintain healthy figures and lives by walking a LOT.

Exercise is really 80% mental and 20% physical. It is not easy to start and it is hard to maintain a good routine. Exercise is hard work and who really likes to work that hard?

At the end of the day, it is really about valuing yourself. I exercise because I see the value in being as healthy as I can be so that I can have a full cup from which I can help those who depend on me.

I could go on for hours about the benefits of working out. People may get tired of my warrior rhetoric, but it is in our genes to do so. I get this primal feeling looking in the mirror and feeling my blood pump through my muscles. Feeling that burn. If you need help getting motivated, do yourself a favor and buy PUMPING IRON THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION.

But why not maximize what you can be physically as a person? Your cheating yourself otherwise. If I don't go to the gym and get the pump, I start feeling antsy and moody. I usually don't understand why until I realize it has been a few days since I have been to the gym. I usually only do 4 exercises per body part, and dedicate one day in particular a week to compound exercises such as squat, push press, dead lift etc. But truth be told I am not a gym rat, I don't spend too much time there. I am just consistent in that I go a few times a week pretty much every week. It all adds up, and couple this with the warrior diet and my body is the best it has ever been. When in doubt just do pushups and pullups...and RUN. SPRINT. When was the last time you were in a dead sprint, either for something, or running from something? It's in our genes, man had to work for his food for 100,000 years and run for survival, you must take top flight to maximize yourself as a human!

I don't play sports anymore, and people ask me why I work out. I tell them I am training for the apocalypse. If or when shit hits the fan I want to be the best suited man for survival and reproduction, so all the fine ladies here will need me. :sasmokin:

Your only lifting for 30 minutes, but I guess if you are not wasting time then it could be a tough workout. I'm not sure what you mean by 30 reps...is that like 3 sets of 10 each?

If I had limited time, I would just do bench press and lat pull downs. The bench will work your chest, shoulders and triceps. The lat pull downs will work your back and biceps. Butterflies only work your chest, so it is kind of a waste of time if you are short on time. If I had time for 5 exercises, I would do bench press, lat pull down, shoulder press, triceps and biceps curls...and try to do 3 sets of each. If you do lower body, then leg press or squats.

What I'm saying is you can cut back to a few exercises rather than trying to do a lot in a short time. That way going to the gym doesn't seem like so much work. You won't get burned out.

I think anyone who's getting bored with exercise should consider a personal trainer.
The interaction with another person helps keep your interest up.
But more important, the constant changing of the routine keeps everything fresh.
As a bonus, you will probably make more rapid improvement.
I see my personal trainer once a week, and do two other workouts on my own. Works for me.

But it's not self evident to me! That's what I'm saying, it gets me compliments, but I'm not sure what else. I've never been out of shape, so I don't know if or how I'm treated differently by other. I also don't feel like I deserve more or anything like that.

dude you are gifted, a testosterone level is quite high!

thanks I have been working to keep a high test level. My muscle growth and strength are thru the roof. However, due to adrenal fatigue (read prolonged un relieved stress i.e. too much cortisol for too long a time, very destructive)) believe it or not, my libido is low. Go figure.

I have been studying intensely the proper hormone levels for men. LH, FSH, Estrogen, Estradiol, total test, free test, bioavailable test, SHBG (sex hormone binding globlulin), cortisol, and minerals.

Its complex stuff and its the future of medicine.
