I often hear the phrase "It's a guy thing!" being used by a guy who's having difficulty explaining WHY men do certain things. Finally, after failing to explain it, the dude just blurts out this phrase in desperation and gives up.

So, what kinds of male acitivites or habits would you categorize simply as "guy things"?

For example, I would list the following:
--thinking that farting in front of others is funny;
--belching loudly in public (especially when he's with "the guys")
--being curious about what other guys are "packing"
--making a big thing out of sports events like the SuperBowl
--practically worshipping his car
--dreading doing anything even hinting of gayness
(like going to the opera or to a Broadway show).

Please note that I am not at all criticizing men who do these things. It's
just part of.. well...the nature of the beast!

So what kinds of things have YOU done (or observed other men doing) that you would consider "guy things"? Thanks!

Well I think some guys might say viewing porn is a guy thing! But I think women view it too, certainly guys don't corner the market.

One interesting polarizer I've noticed was the movie "Sideways". Every guy that I know who's seen it has found it hilarious, and virtually none of the women (maybe one) have found it even slightly entertaining.

I guess that if you want to see two hours of "guy-ness" that's outside the scope of the Man Show, that's a good place to start.

Is the object in that avatar a virginal?

It looks to be, but I don't remember totally what the definition of a virginal is. Apart from the fact that a critic once said that it "Grunted like a stuck pig in the bass".

And as for the "guy-ness" thing....

Thinking that underwear is appropriate hosts' attire
Forgetting things at home
Crotch scratching
Scratching of the crack
Plumbers' crack

The list goes on and on....

Not getting "Sideways" is not an exclusively female phenomenon. It also happens when gay guys try to watch the movie. That and any of the "Ocean" movies. Right over the head.

Well, there are "guy things" and there are "guy things."

Basically there ARE real differences between men and women, not just in the obvious ways, but in the ways we TEND to think. However, as civilized creatures, we CAN wait to scratch that itch, choose not to spit, and so on. "Guy thing" tends to be a convenient excuse for hyper masculine behavior that may be more of an attempt to be ACCEPTED as male than to BE male.

Thanks, folks, for these great responses--especially you, MaleBonding.

And BTW, I didn't "get" Sideways much at all either. The scene I liked best was near the end when the naked guy chased the car down the street. He was pretty hot (and hung)!

Well, maybe Sideways is more of a "straight guy thing" instead..

I thought "Sideways" was one of the most POINTLESS films of all time. I felt like Elaine from "Seinfeld" when she couldn't understand why people liked "The English Patient" and just yelled out something like "Oh, just die already!"

And ALL of the people I know who liked "Sideways" were women.
