FLAG - I've gone to Breck with beginning ski/board-ers and they had fun. There are a lot of green and blue runs on peaks 8 and 9. Look on the trail map around 5 chair for runs like Twister, Springmeister and Swinger. You should be able to have fun seeing if the slope lives up to the shirts promise. Another area to consider, Steamboat. If the snow is so so, there is still the hot spring outside of town.

The helmet is kind of like a bike helmet. Buy something that fits and is light. Vents can be good too.

This year's snowfall was supposed to follow last year's. With the storms being blocked at the start of the season then hammering the mountains in the second half. So far its held true. Hopefully the storm train starts up again and March and April will be as good as last year's.

FLAG, I thought I heard it was actually a La Nina (sorry, don't know how to add the tilde) year, and at least around Colorado the weather folks are saying we will make up for the lack of snow in the next few months. May have to believe that when I see it, because it's been pretty pitiful in my neck of the woods, snow-wise. Hope you get to go hit the slopes!

Thank you, I was a bit confused. :) You are correct, and apparently the weather patterns will continue to be unpredictable this year.

:fingersx: I'm hoping for spotty snow and cheap lift tickets. :08:

Unless you are offering a weekend at chez ServiceableMale (what was that about hot springs? :biggrin1:), there will be no destination vacations until I actually can ski.

Do you have any recommendations for a good helmet?

In the North Eastern part of New York the weather has been very very very bad, temperatures way above freezing and only rain. I hope to get to Vermont in February and make up for all of the lost 2011 time.

The weather here in Germany and I think most parts of Austria (will have to call my relatives to ask) is the same here this year. All we've had for weeks now is rain, rain and more rain. Very mild, but we're having bad storms almost every week now.
If it continues like that, we'll have summer by March.
They had to cancel lots of Alpin Ski Tournaments in Bavaria because of the lack of snow.

Unfortunately, no. This month in NYC was mild and rainy. Which was enjoyable in the walk around the neighb kind of way, but not even a hint of snow. Last year there was a blizzard at this time - I have vid of the snow drifts outside my apt to prove it! :biggrin1:

I am now in California and there's all this damn 80 degree weather chasing away the cold and rain.

Snow fun will be had, though. But it definitely seems like a mild winter. Does anyone know if this an El Niño year?

Yikes! Ok, I'm definitely splashing out on an ultra plush, looks like a pillow strapped to my head, padded ski helmet.

I have a Breckenridge tee. Or, should say I stole the ex-bf's and totally *heart* it. You're obviously extremely experienced, as I understand most, if not all, of Breckenridge is for expert skiers. Would love to see pics of the snow in the Colorado area, if you would like to share?

A few weeks back it looked like Austria was getting snow. I remember seeing a near 100" base at a couple resorts. Now rain?

You should have no problems tracking down spotty snow. Probably also some good deals on multi day stays at a resort/area. Any good deals at your local hills?

I may have missed out on something here. There are many ski areas day trip-able from chez moi. Maybe I should turn it into the LPSG Chalet :) Sadly its a bit far from the hotsprings. Especially if the day trip involved an apres ski soak. Mmm. Its a much better 2-3 day trip. Sure you are not interested in a destination ski trip? :)

Helmet wise I like my Giro Fuse. Warm, light, does not block hearing, and it fits. I got the second one on closeout. I've got doubts its still made.

Who else is looking forward to the 2011-12 ski/snowboard season?

How long have you been riding? and How long did it take before you were no longer abusing the snow with your butt? :biggrin1:

I ask because over the summer I made a vow to learn how to snowboard this winter, and will be dragging everyone I can to the Poconos (cabin w/ hot tub *need I say more*), Sugar Bowl, or Mountain High/Big Bear to watch me fall on my ass over and over again until I *at minimum* own the bunny slope. :fingersx: But would actually love to be somewhat proficient by March-ish.

Still looking at boards, but the guy at my local REI suggested a few for tall ladies that will be on sale next week - so I'm pulling it together and trying to calm my major stokedness until I can hit the slopes.

Is this going to be you in a year or two?

Browsing through youtube the other day I saw this great video of a boarder riding at night. LED Snow Surfer Snowboard - Jacob Sutton - YouTube

If you are not out on the slopes this should get you all thinking about it :).

That was beautiful.

Sadly I'm still impressed with the death-defying, flashy guys: K2 Snowboarding: Opening Day at Alpental - YouTube

Is this going to be you in a year or two?

One can hope. Though, at this point, I would be happy with a just one week of snow days. Or rain. Just anything to remeber we're still in winter, actually.

That is some nice terrain. Good snow and boarding too. If you need winter head west. It is around to be found.

Bro just went to Andorra - luckily snowed loads day before he went, since it had been dry for a month before that, lol. Loved it tho.

If you've got the chance, nothing beats heli-skiing (or riding) in Alaska. My latest absurdly expensive drug. Untouched terrain everywhere, first descents, enormous steeps and powder like you've never imagined. It sticks to steeper faces there than anywhere else, resulting in spines of snow all over to keep popping off of.

BTW - Northeasterners need to play hookie and head to Vermont. Mad River Glen picked up well over 2 feet this weekend and is 100% open. Everything in the north - Stowe, S'bush, etc are in amazing shape
