Don't know how many are aware of the ludicrous foul up that came to public attention a few weeks back about convicted criminals being realised back into the communuity instead of being deported (or at least considered for deportation).

On a broadly similar theme (Government incompetence), I came across these today:

    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21052006/323/britain-brands-nearly-1-500-citizens-criminals-mistake.html

    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21052006/325/hundreds-branded-criminals-due-mix.html

In my work I need a CRB check each year and I am horrified that such a major foul can happen (although not entirely surprised  ). Given that the completion of the form requires proof of identity such as passport or drivers license which need to be witnessed by the organisation submitting the application it worries me that not only are innocent people having their lives and careers blighted but worse, criminals are probably being missed.

It didn't affect me but I'm curious if a similar process is undertaken in the US or elsewhere and if anyone has ever been on the end of such a monumental mistake or been victims of identity theft and what their experience was like and how did you correct it?
