Reading all these stories reminds me of a time in Rome, Italy.
I was there attending a conference and to give a report. The day before, about 10 of us were met at the airport by the president of a large Italian company who was also the conference organizer. We were put on a bus and taken to our hotel. Most of the attendees had brought their wifes or husbands along with them. I was married at the time, but had come alone.
