"THEY LIVE" (USA) 1988
Director: John Carpenter.
Stars: Roddy Piper, Keith David, Meg Foster.

Not a classic in any way, shape or form. The idea's behind "They Live" are strong. The first part of this film concentrates on building the lead character's background. Set in the familiar surroundings of recession hit L.A.. You get to see things that are normally hidden from regular Hollywood movies. The film also delves into 'subliminal messaging'.
With a clever script writer, this film would make for a great remake.

Jacknoir.

Not to mention, one of the best street fight scenes ever filmed, between Piper and David. And Piper's awesome fall down a hillside after being thrown off a balcony/deck.

"THE LOST WEEKEND" (USA) 1945
Director: Billy Wilder.
Stars: Ray Milland, Jane Wyman, Phillip Terry.

For a long time, (I had'nt seen this film for years). I convinced myself that James Stewart played the lead role in this film.
Wherever you are I apologise Ray!.
This is an excellent film about an intelligent man with a serious alcohol problem. If you have'nt seen "The lost weekend", and you like old movies. You need to see this film.

"BLOW-UP" (UK) 1966
Director: Michelangelo Antonioni.
Stars: David Hemmings, Vanessa Redgrave, Sarah Miles.

Set in London during the swinging 60's. The lead character is a successful fashion photographer (based on David Bailey among others). While out in the park, he photographs a couple. The story is about what happens after this event.

"SURROGATES" (USA) 2009
Director: Jonathan Mostow.
Stars: Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Ving Rhames.

An interesting modern sci-fi movie. This film has a strong storyline with excellent acting. Is it me?. Or do most 'live action' films that feature CGI in these ever sophisticated times. Look cheap and unconvincing?.
Look out for Arnold Schwarzenegger's guest appearence.

"THE LADYKILLERS" (UK) 1955
Director: Alexander Mackendrick.
Stars: Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, Cecil Parker.

Another brilliant comedy from Ealing Studios. This film is about a gang of robbers. Who organise a robbery from a rented room in an old lady's house, (located at the end of a quite cul-de-sac by the railway).
If you enjoy this film, remember the title. As the 'Play' might eventually get to a place near you. In the UK, the 'play' is worth seeing for the 'set' alone.

"NIGHTWATCH" (Russia) 2004
Director: Timur Bekmambetov.
Stars: Konstatin Khabenskiy, Vladimir Menshov, Mariya Poroshina.

When this film was completed, it was the most expensive Russian film made. "NIGHTWATCH" is a superior vampire movie based on the first novel in a bestselling trilogy.
The quality of the story and the acting manage to overcome this effect-laden horror. A classic of it's genre.

"CARNIVAL OF SOULS" (USA) 1962
Director: Herk Harvey.
Stars: Candace Hilligoss, Frances Feist, Sidney Berger.

This is one of those classic films that seem to get buried or hidden out of view. "CARNIVAL OF SOULS" is a low budget horror film. That shows Hollywood where they're going wrong.
While the make-up was'nt first rate. The quality of the story and the acting was excellent. The film creates one of the creepiest atmosphere's you'll see.

"EYE OF THE NEEDLE" (UK) 1981
Director: Richard Marquand.
Stars: Donald Sutherland, Kate Nelligan, Stephen Mackenna.

Set in England during the Second World War. This film tells the story of a village that's been infiltrated by Germans, as part of an assassination plot. A well made war thriller with a strong storyline. One of Donald Sutherland's most underated film's.

"RISE OF THE FOOTSOLDIER" (UK) 2007
Director: Julian Gilbey.
Stars: Ricci Harnett, Terry Stone, Craig Fairbrass.

Based on an autobiography, "RISE OF THE FOOTSOLDIER" tells the story of a London gangster. The film contains an intriguing 'spin' on the story of the "Essex Boys". Quite violent, sometimes funny this is a film that grows on you.

"BOY ON A DOLPHIN" (USA/WEST GERMANY) 1957
Director: Jean Negulesco.
Stars: Alan Ladd, Clifton Webb, Sophia Loren.

An underated film about a sponge diver (Loren), who discovers a priceless antiquity. A well made film, excellently acted by Alan Ladd and Sophia Loren.
This film capture's Sophia Loren at her most beautiful. The scene where she emerges from a 'dive' is worth the DVD alone.

"SHINJUKU INCIDENT" (HK) 2009
Director: Tung-Shing Yee.
Stars: Jackie Chan, Naoto Takenaka, Daniel Wu.

Not your usual Jackie Chan movie. A story about illegal Chinese immigrants trying to make a life in Japan. In the film, the balance of power between the Yakuza, Taiwanese gangs and the Chinese seems to be in a constant state of flux. While the effects are'nt completely convincing. The film is very watchable, and Jackie Chan is excellent.

"THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES" (USA) 2002
Director: Mark Pellington.
Stars: Richard Gere, Laura Linney, David Eigenberg.

From the 1990's right up to now. There have been a lot of films and t.v. productions that have followed in the success of "The X-Files". "THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES" is one of those films.
Apparently based on true events. The film revolves around a jounalist (Gere), coming to terms with his wife's death. And a series of unusual incidents that occur in a small town.
For me this is Richard Gere's greatest film.

I'm embarrassed to say I haven't seen any of these.

May I suggest PAPRIKA (2006)

When a machine that allows therapists to enter their patient's dreams is stolen, all hell breaks loose. Only a young female therapist can stop it: Paprika.

Director: Satoshi Kon

Trippy Japanese animation. Takes the whole mirror-in-a-mirror concept to unbelievable levels.

"BLESS THIS HOUSE" (UK) 1972
Director: Gerald Thomas.
Stars: Sid James, Diana Coupland, Sally Geeson.

A cool comedy from 1970's England. Sid James stars in a film that inspired a T.V. series.

"KANSA CITY TRUCKING Co" (US) 1976
Director: Tim Kincaid.
Stars: Jack Wrangler, Richard Locke, Steve Boyd.

A feature-length Gay Porn film from the 1970's. A time when a lot of the Men who took part in gay porn actually looked 'straight'. (Those were the days).
With a good 'plot-line' and decent acting from the 'central' actors. This is a film that delivers. "KANSAS CITY TRUCKING Co" is a hot, sweaty, sexually charged, man to man porn classic.

"ONE DEADLY SUMMER" (aka "L'ete Meurtrier") (FRA) 1983
Director: Jean Becker.
Stars: Isabelle Adjani, Alain Souchon, Suzanne Flan.

As films about desire, lust and revenge go. "ONE DEADLY SUMMER" is a pretty 'hot' one. That's due to one key factor, Isabelle Adjani. Watch and burn.

"VICTIM" (UK) 1961
Director: Basil Dearden.
Stars: Dirk Bogarde, Sylvia Sims, Dennis Price.

An intelligent, well made thriller. About ordinary men trying to keep their sexuality secret. At a time when homosexuality was a criminal offence in Britain. Easily one of Dirk Bogarde's greatest roles.

My dinner with Andre: Andre Gregory and Wally Shawn...
Razers Edge: remake with Bill Murry - both very introspective films
Rocky Horror Picture show: Just campy fun
Conspiracy: Kennith Branaugh, stanly tucci, colin firth among others: Real time (90 minute conference, you basically sit in....on the lay out of Germanys' FINAL SOLUTION"...

Out of all of them, I would start with Conspiracy-- (ps: I looked up THE WANSEE PROTOCOL (the plans for the ovens/camps)--and you can download the only known copy to exist-

"THE BOURNE IDENTITY" (US) 1988
Director: Roger Young.
Stars: Richard Chamberlain, Jaclyn Smith, Anthony Quayle.

This was the first 'adaption' of "THE BOURNE IDENTITY". Made for T.V. as a mini-series, you can see it had a big budget. Unfortunately the effects are terrible, Richard Chamberlain is mis-cast. And the end scenes leave a lot to be desired. The term 'Family' is one to look out for.
Is this why Robert Ludlum got so involved in the first Matt Damon film?.
If you like the "MD" "Bourne" trilogy, you should check this out. As the movie does have a certain charm.
